What are the signs of horribly off timing?

It got truck to the point where i can drive it, but when i got to drive it it does not act right.

If i give it any kind of throttle it wants to die and it has no power. I have not adjusted the mixture screws either, could that be contributing to the low of power and or the dieing.

One last thing, where do i plug in the vacuum line for the dizzy? do i plug it in on the vacuum tree or on the carb on the passenger side?

Turn your idle screws out 3 turns each from the lightly seated position set the timing at 10 dbtdc without vacuum to the dizzy then plug it into the tree and set the needles for the highest rpm you can achieve. use the curb idle to set the idle at about 800 rpm.
 
Ok, now when you say lightly seated, i should turn them all the way in then turn them out 3 turns?
 
See i think thats my problem, my damper is painted over so i cant see any of the marks. I have it timed by ear but i think it is way off.

I would get some paint thinner or stripper and take it to the pulley so that you can see the timing marks.

Thanks, thats a great suggestion. The only person who is wasting your time is yourself for reading it. Also i have been trying, not everyone's trucks go together so perfectly.

I would get some paint thinner or stripper and take it to the pulley so that you can see the timing marks.

Thanks for giving the only suggestion. How deep are the marks, i thought about taking some sand paper to it but i was afraid of taking off the marks along with the paint.
 
There not that deep, but a wire brush should help too. I would do as I said and try that first, can't do more then hurt the paint. At least you have her driving (sound good with the glass pack?)

There is no way to accuratly time it without being able to see the marks, and it is really hard to time it by ear.

Also check to see if the dampener has slipped. If is like most dampeners there is a outer steel part, an inner steel part and rubber in the middle to act like a cushion, if that rubber gets weak it will let the steel outer move relitive to the steel inner and the timing marks will not be right.

Double check your spark plug wires too, it will run if two are mixed up, but if it ran well that way Ford would have done it originally...

Either do the metering block thing or shop for a different carb, the stock one will run rich without the computer holding its hand no matter what you do.

Hook up a vacuum line from the distributor to the carburetor above the carburetor plates to get ported vacuum not at the back of the carburetor or on the intake manifold vacuum tree.

You can only time by "ear" if you KNOW how it's supposed to sound and run when it's timed correctly. Need to get yourself a timing light (if you don't have one) and clean off that crank pulley so you can see the marks. Don't go at it with a wire brush or you might brush them right off. The marks are very fine and extremely difficult to see under a light unless they're marked with whiteout.

Yeah i was super happy when i got the truck to move under its own power. I have not yet got a new muffler so it sounds kind of crappy.

Well i got a non feedback carb so i dont have to worry about a metering block. I had to set my plug wires back one on the distributor to get it to run.

I have a timing light. With this being my first car its just been more learning then doing.

I am going to try to get the paint off and find the timing marks.

I had to set my plug wires back one on the distributor to get it to run.

When you say you had to put the wires back one on the distributor, do you mean they are not on the cap exactly where they are supposed to be?

You might have the distributor off on the cam gear. Not sure how that would work out, but it would throw anything you can do with a timing light out the window.

Find TDC by rolling it over until you feel compression out #1 spark plug hole. Keep on going until the pointer is pointing at 0 degrees on the damper. When you insert the dizzy, make sure the rotor is pointing at #1 cylinder, not close to it but right at it. Adjust your timing from there.

Correct. My number one is where my number 6 is. So i am not going to be able to time this thing at all with the dizzy being off 1? Its weird tho, i found TDC twice before i put my dizzy in, but i had a hard time getting it to go in.

Crap, i dont have time to do that for about 4 days. :sad:
