attached is a pic of my carbed 302 and it doesnt have a timing pointer. I need one to set the timing. Can anyone help me out here and tell me where the pointer bolts to and what specific pointer will fit?

What is that timing cover from? I might just be the view but i don't think mine looks like that.

Damn, here's a case of Deja-voo....................... Seems you asked this same question a few months back. You need a different timing cover there bub. The pointer bolts on using the two bottom cover bolts on the passenger side, your cover doesn't seem to use these two.

make your own.

The 289 covers have the passenger side coolant inlet port waterpump and there were two different timing covers and pumps. The later cover can use the 70-up pumps, as long as you use the correct timing pointer.

thx baddad457.

Does anybody have a pic of there timing cover and pointer installed onto the engine? I just want to get an idea of how its supposed to look.

There are several variations of the cover with different pointer locations. On my unmolested '66' 289, the pointer is actually a cast part of the cover and has a raised slot in it. Here is shot of a '72-73' 302 with the bolt on pointer.

You have to use the pointer that matches your balancer. Ford made one for either side of the motor. Pull number one plug and get #1 cylinder close to TDC and you will no which balancer you have by which side the marks are on and therefore know which side pointer you need.

That's not a 72-73 pointer, it's on the wrong side of the balancer for a post 69 small block. The waterpump inlet would be covering it.

Baddad, You are right. I used the later block with the early cover, water pump and dampener so it would fit right in my Ranchero.

how do u tell what balancers match which pointers? I got the balancer off already. If i post a pic of it can someone tell me which pointer to get?
