The timing belt on my 84 2.3L went and the inner and outer covers with it. I went through all the necessary steps to replacing the timing belt. Aligned crank pulley to TDC for cylinder 1, aligned the casting mark on the camshaft sprocket to the casting mark on the AUX sprocket and checked alignment with the dipstick. Routed belt crank, AUX, cam, then tensioner. Everything aligned the rotor is pointing to tower one. Turned it over a few times by hand to confirm alignment. Trying to start it it’s super weak and only stays on with the throttle being messed with. Confirmed spark is present and fuel is getting delivered. I am pretty stumped and could use some knowledgable insight on what to do. I put the link to the video I used for all the alignment. Newer coil pack rangers seem to have better markings.

My best guess is someone had adjusted the distributor to where the aux shaft where it shouldn't have been... if you can find the SPOUT connector and adjust the timing to where it should be that should help.

It doesn’t look like I have the ignition system with that connector. Would pulling and plugging the vacuum line to the distributor result the same? One of the steps I did omit from my repair was pulling the distributor and setting it. I assumed it pointing to #1 on TDC meant it was fine. Would it make sense to pull it out and reseat it?

I'd missed the '84 thing, don't think that would be TFI ignition so might not have the spout connector... especially if you have had the distributor out I would check the timing, there should be a sticker under the hood saying what it should be, I've never had a 2.3L with a distributor so I don't know what it should be... might take two people if you have to feather the throttle to keep it running while checking it although adjusting it one way will likely help it run better at idle until you get the timing light on and get it dialed in.

Here is a link to be starting and keeping it alive with the throttle.. any insight would be super appreciated
