TDI Ranger Build

Would there have been enough room behind the firewall to push it back enough to fit the coolant outlet and the vacuum pump without moving the engine forward? I'm thinking of doing a swap into a 4wd and really don't want to have to deal with a custom drive shaft for the front.

Definitely not. You'd either need to custom make a coolant outlet and block off the vacuum pump OR you would need to clearance the firewall heavily.

That doesn't even touch on the clearance issue with the steering rack/shaft that you'll run into with the accessories with the engine moved back those 2".

Darn, that's really too bad. I guess I would have to get the drive shaft shortened then.

Sorry if this has already been asked but would you be interested in selling the drawings for the adapter plate on a per use basis?

It has been asked and the answer is no. :icon_thumby:

Wow awesome build! You have a ranger getting the same mileage as my Harley.

Thanks ST. I'm taking it easy this tank to see if I can crack 40mpg. Looking good so far which is impressive considering my "Check Susp" light has been active most mornings (glow plugs turning on in sub 40F temps).

That's with the 3.73 gears still right? Very impressive. Any idea for the mileage when you re gear? 15% maybe?

No, I'm running the 3.08 gears now. Even in a Golf/Jeta tdi going with taller gears doesn't really gain you much on mileage..maybe 2-5%. I'm very happy with the significant decrease in noise on the highway but am less excited about how much I'll have to ride the clutch when towing or hauling anything heavy.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I intially was going to solder and heat shrink but decided to go with these as they are more fool proof for the novice wiring guy. I do believe they will be better than somebody's first time soldering and heat shrink. I'll post some pictures after I use a couple.
I was a VW Audi technician for 4 years and they used the heat shrink butt connectors exclusively for repairs. They figured it would do less damage to the harnesses.

Been away from this thread too long... g-geek been ROCKIN'!! :icon_thumby::icon_welder:

Been away from flying too long also... Mercedes A-class diesels, heavily mod'd to burn (cheaper) Jet-A, have been spinning props on (limited) production aircraft for a few years now...

You'll get a kick out of this...guy put the same motor that's in my truck in a Cessna.

Did you ever hit 40mpg?

Unfortunately I haven't. :no2:

Even after swapping in the 3.08 axle AND running a hard tonneau cover I saw no noticeable change in mileage. I did notice one interesting thing last week though. I had to leave it sit for a few weeks outside and had 5-6" of hard packed snow on top of the cab. I left it up there during a commute home and I was only able to manage 26mpg. I knew the aero of the cab was crappy but I didn't imagine it would hit the mileage more than towing an entire jetta on a car dolly. :icon_confused:

For fun, a shot of its current load: 6.2L long block, cherry picker, tdi short block, 15gal of coolant, and a set of snow tires.

lol

the starter for the 6.2 is bigger then the 1.9....and has more hp then the 6.2 it starts:icon_rofl:

cold weather and winter fuel mix kill mpg. winter diesel needs additive where i am at, i run the ez-oil diesel aid, and powerservice for cetane boost. sometimes howes. i dont run much oil blend when its real cold if any.
