I just picked up another ranger, 99 ext cab 4x4 3.0 with 59,000 miles. I drove this thing home about 50 miles and when I got home I decided to put it in to low range, and now it wont come back out:shok:. The 4x4 low and high range lights are flashing six times, I tried putting the truck in neutral and tapping the actuator on the case and nothing works... Is the actuator actually bad or is the case shot??? Is there maybe a trick, what am I doing wrong??? Help please, Thank You. Sorry guys, it is an automatic...

Manual- Clutch in, tranny in N, and brake depressed.

Auto- Tranny in N, brake depressed.

The flashing lights are in indicator that the system is detecting a fault somewhere.

I'm sure you know, but to shift into or out of low range, you need to be in neutral (or park) foot on brake, speed less than 3 mph. There are useful threads at the top this category that might be helpful.

If all else fails, you can pull the shift motor off easily (4 bolts to remove counterweight; 4 bolts to remove shift motor; one electrical connection) and shift it back to 2WD by hand.

I'm sure someone more useful than I will be along shortly...

After calming down and doing some reading, I'm not the only one that has had this problem. I will check the fuses tomorrow and hopefully thats all it will take:haha:It has to be something simple. Will let you know tomorrow.

i had the same problem with my 00 ranger. same setup you have. when i went to low range for the first time, it got stuck in low and wouldnt not come out. i ended up replacing the electric motor on the x-fer case. tore the old one apart and found rust in the brushes. did clean it up some and it worked again, just couldnt return the new one cause it was used.

I had a similar problem with my 96. The lights flashed and I could not shift into 4hi or lo. I replaced the electric shift motor on the transfer case. About $150 at Oreilly, lifetime gurantee. This fixed the 4hi, but then it would not go into 4lo, I went to a dealer and they traced a short in the dash, a relay is in behind the stereo and a wire going to it had shorted out. You can also take the shift motor apart and clean all the inner parts, then put it back together and see if this helps. cheapest option to try first.
