The 4wd in my 2004 is acting up. Truck is new to me so not sure of the history. we got a huge storm and I went out to clear the driveway, I started the truck put it in 4wd high and it the 4x4 light went on, then it went off. The 4 low light came on. I never put the switch to 4wd low. right now the 4wd low light is on but I put the truck in park and put the switch to 2wd and the 4 low stayed on . I drove the truck about 300 feet in the snow. I think it is in 4wd low. There is a driving ban so I can drive it right now. I read a post by Adsmo8 that on the 2004 models the lights come on when the 4wd is actuated. I guess there is a sensor in there that reads the gears spinning or something like that. Anyone have an idea what would make this happen? I did put it in 4wd when I got it 3 months ago and it acted up in a similar manner. I used it in 4wd high a month ago for a short time and it worked fine. Sorry if this is confusing.

Ok. I went out and started the truck and let it warm up a little. The 4 low light was on. I then put it in neutral pressed the brake and shifted out of 4 low into 4 high. It made a slight clunk and the 4 low light went off. So now the switch is in 4 high but the light is off. I turned the truck off and and then started it again. I turned the switch to 2wd and then 4 high and the 4 high light came on. So now it seems to be in 4 high. I still can't drive yet because of the driving ban. According to my OM I need to have the brake pressed and the truck in neutral to shift into 4 low. I am almost positive that I had the truck in Park and I did not shift to 4 low it just went into 4 low when i shifted into 4 high. I am guessing the module is the issue. where is the module? passenger side kicker? I looked on rockauto for the part but did not see the module. Next time I go out there I will check for codes.
thanks for the help.

Ok, so over the last few days I have switched from 2wd to 4wd high and back to 2wd about a dozen times. It has worked perfectly everytime. I have not tried to go into 4wd low and the truck has not gone into 4wd low on its own. Maybe it was just me screwing it up. Stay tuned?
