What the heck is with states stripping unions of their bargaining rights? Ohio just got screwed. Wisconsin just followed.

on the one hand, i can see the negative, but on the other hand, unions have been getting away with far too much.

there's no reason a guy should make 30 dollars an hour to drive four bolts into a plastic pan with an air ratchet when i'm managing an entire factory's worth of computers for 15 an hour, being non union.

Tell me about it Jim. Heather graduated college in 2006 to be a Teacher. She's been subbing for the same district for over three years now with no full time job in sight, and now she is getting most of what she had to look forward too ripped away before she can even start to enjoy it.

Minds well drop outta college and get a job making $11 an hour. What's the point of spending $50K to get educated when a person cannot get hired into their field of profession.

Have you read about what the governer of Michigan is trying to do?

I am glad the states are finally waking up and eliminating the "entitlements"
The private sector gets to pay for all of the unions excessive pensions.

Have you ever thought " why does it cost so much for a union made product?"

Two of the 3 car manufactures will never be solvent , as it cost more to pay for the retired, and their benefits than they make from the products they sell
Your County and City employees (unions) have a Human resources director , that has a panel of employees that make demands for specific benefits such as medical , dental , vision etcetera that are paid for by you.

Do any of you in the private sector have this kind of leverage/
How about your 401K and your contribution to it ?

One thing very few remember about the Unions (were once the mob) the administrative people always get all they want , even when the union members (workers) get nothing.

Some truth here!

I look at it 2 ways. On one hand the unions have their place and are useful at times to help groups get what they need. However on the other hand there are union leaders who could care less about the people they represent and are there just to but money in their pockets.

Funny as a Lead erection foreman (ironworker) on prevailing wage jobs my rate is $68.75 hr straight time, thats with 10 bucks an hr perdium and usually 20 hrs a week OT, BIG dollars.

Did you guys also miss the fact that Lima is stuck up in Alaska to make that money? lol

If you want to make $70 an hour, its really not that hard if you want to live in the middle of butt-f**k nowhere, working in a mining or gas piping camp. I know people who work 3 months a year, and party the rest of the time, because in that 3 months they can make $45 000 in Northern Alberta. It means 16 hours a day, 6 days a week, brutal work in rediculous weather, but the paycheck makes it all worthwhile for some.

edit - to make my post relevant, arn't states only restricting the bargaining rights of government union positions, not all unions? Considering the current budget issues, I can't say I am terribly surprised the states are saying we cant pay you more money, and we dont want to let you strike over it either. Perhaps not a particularly favorable move, but if wages go up, and the budget has no more money for those people, someone gets laid off, and now whats "fair" for the majority completely screws a minority... Which then puts another person on unemployment, which continues to make the US dollar look bad and trade bad, and slows the recovery process...ect ect... It could create a negative feedback cycle that only makes things worse.

This is why i want to go back to the middle east as a civillian. Went there as a green suiter and made the same coin as i would anywhere else. There was a civillian guy whose sole job was to source parts that are no longer available through the military supply system but are still in service. He made $300,000+ a year. He'd been there 5years when i was over there.

Yep some places are tough, nothing like putting up red iron in the middle of the Brooks range 24/7 dark, 70 below zero and 80% of the people only speak Inupiat. I am entertaining the thought of heading to SANDS, they are giving money away there.

I don't like unions I've never worked for a union for a reason. I work a real job. I work hard for a living, I do my own decision making. I wouldn't want it any other way.

the way I look at it, many people who work union jobs for state and local government earn their money, and in most cases deserve every penny they get. It's your custodial workers, bus drivers, teachers aides, professional technical people. Many of these people make $30k a year which is barely enough to support a family of 4. Many teachers make $50k a year after being employed for 10 or so years, For someone that had to go through 5+ years of schooling to do so, it's a slap in the face already(especially for the good ones). It's a downward spiral, no jobs in the private sector leads to cuts in the public one. Cutting teaching positions and wages encourages the bad ones to start applying. This in turn affects how prepared the students are for the real world, which leads to more jobs lost because of a lack of competent labor. We need to focus on bringing jobs and industry back to this country through incentives on starting new buisness and tariffs on imported goods (to make it worthwhile to produce goods here).
