Starter bendix

There was talk about the gear being different between the auto and standard starter bendix on the 2.8. All the information used to be on the old forum but it's long gone now. Could someone please clarify as mine has taken a poop and walking sucks. Availability of parts is a pain in the ass here, beside having to deal with the language barrier, so if I have to order a part I want to be sure I get the correct one.

The starter used is a Ford 4" starter. I am not positive about the ranger , however there are different drive gears for this starter (this starter was used on many different vehicles for many years). I would count the teeth on the flex plate or flywheel and contact ford for the correct part number with that information Ford should be able to tell you how many teeth are on the starter drive for that vehicle.

Just in case anyone else is interested and for future reference, it's a nine tooth gear on the bendix. Changed it this morning.

My first truck had a 2.8L with a 5 speed, my memory is failing me, it is a parts truck now, but I THINK I had to replace the bendix, from a 9 tooth to a ten tooth starter gear.

I remember the new starters had the gear for the auto, and you had to replace the gear or it will vibrate the starter loose, and damage your flywheel.

I think it is stupid that TRS has nothing on this.

On the older version of the site there was a post about others have the same issue and I was told that at one time Ford had a service bulletin about it. There is a ten tooth bendix that you can buy for a Escort that will go into the Ranger/Bronco II starter but darned if I remember the year and model Escort it had to come from. If I recall it was VERY specific about the model. Maybe somebody else on here remembers it?

To be sure, just count the teeth of the old starter and MAKE SURE the new starter has the same number. The aftermarket starters all have nine teeth, if you got a early manual, a 2.8 with a manual, make SURE, you may need to go to a starter shop and have the new starter retrofitted with a TEN tooth starter gear.

Symptoms of a nine tooth starter with a flywheel designed for a ten tooth will be constant loosening of the starter bolts and chips out of the nine tooth bendix, usually chips one tooth, and will chip them all to where the bendix will no longer "slide" into the ring gear, thus it will just "spin" and not engage.

That's the thing enginepaul, we DID wonder why it was not on the tech pages or a sticky on the OLD SITE, because it was not part of the Tech pages, and the old forum is long gone, and it's been so long, I don't remember the details of that post. All I know is what I remember, I am willing to help users, but I really don't care for the tech pages, for the reason previously stated. They didn't care back then, and now they care, guess what the info is not to be found, great!
