Some advice needed about my new-to-me 02 EDGE *PICS*

So I finally landed myself a pretty mint ranger, very happy to have another Ranger. I picked this 2002 Ranger EDGE with a supercab and 3.0 automatic from the original owner here in Loomis California. The truck has only 56k on it and drives like a dream! But I do want to ensure this truck will last me a lifetime and would like some advice on what I should do mechanically. I am under the assumption most everything is original so I was planning on starting with a oil & filter change, and new motocraft spark plugs. Do you guys think I need new wires? Also should I consider changing the fuel filter? Any motocraft parts number are greatly appreciated.

There are only two issues I have come across. First is at low speeds I can hear some type of popping noise coming from the front end, not sure where exactly yet. Any ideas?

Secondly the brakes made a odd noise while braking, BUT only when braking down hill, never had a vehicle do this before, any ideas?

Here are some pictures!

Nice truck!

I would do an oil change, check all fluids and filters, and then just drive it and pay attention to whatever pops up.

Definitely pull the wheels and examine brake components to check out your noise and braking issues.

Right now off summit i'm getting parts number from motocraft of

MOF-WR5996 for the wires and
MOF-SP432 for the plugs is this correct?

Popping sounds could be anything from worn out ball joint to a loose sway bar end-link, no way to know for sure. Since you need to examine the brakes anyway, look around and make sure everything is tight and check for anything worn/torn bushing, boots etc.

That is in pristine condition, nice find! Jack it up and do some brake inspection and cleaning.

great looking truck.
now, on behalf of all the guys in the rust belt: "we hate you" :D
around here they didn't look that good even when new.

makes a noise only when braking down hill? possible the ABS activating because there isn't muck weight on the rear?

I guess to test that theory you could put a few weight challenged friends in the back and try it.

Hey guys I appreciate the compliments! It took me a while to find this gem but I am in LOVE!

What do you guys think about having the transmission fluid and rear diff. fluid changed?

Nice ride.
I recently acquired a 2000 4x. I've been going through the maintenance and working out a few bugs and weird things the p o had done. It takes a bit to get used to the new and figure out the quirks.

Nice truck! You have all the basics covered really.

The popping sound from the front end sounds like a ball joint to me. A little explantion is in order though. Low speed straight line does it pop? Low speed turning does it pop? I have the same issue but I going to be doing a swap soon on mine. Shhhhhhhhhhhhh that is a secret!

Low speed turning is when it pops, but it doesnt take much movement in the steering wheel to get it to pop. Also it seems to be a specific spot, as in I can make the noise happen on command by turning the wheel a few inches to the right.

get a couple pieces of metal, or whatever, put grease between them and place under front wheels. now you can turn the wheels without grinding them into the pavement. start turning, looking & listening. :icon_thumby:
