I had to take my oil pump out (something fell into the rod and pushed it off center, had to remove pump to dislodge it) and its the original 37 y/o pump . Do yall think it's worth it to just replace it now that I've got it off just for peace of mind? New Melling one is only about $100 after shipping and tax

Its out. I would

It really depends on how worn it is and that usually relates to miles on it. I replaced mine at around 250K miles when I had the engine out and partially disassembled to do the cam timing chain rebuild. My oil pressure light would flicker at idle after towing or driving at high speeds for a long period. I think that was mostly due to me running a micron by-pass oil filter that uses about 15% of the oil flow. Wear on the oil pump was also a contributor because the oil light didn't come on before around 220K miles.

I used the Melling higher flow oil pump but would not recommend that unless you have a need for higher oil flow for some reason. I have been told that higher flow or pressure oil pumps can be harmful to engine bearings if not needed. I have a race car that also needed it because it was spinning bearings without a higher flow oil pump.

I would say, if your Ranger is an 86 it would be a good idea to replace it with a stock capacity oil pump since you already have it apart.

Pretty sure its only got 126k on it. The odometer rolled over but its too nice to be 226k

Rangers can be deceiving by appearance. Mine has almost 282K miles on it and it could pass for 82K miles if you don't look at the odometer.
