seeking a factory service manual (perferbly pdf) for 1997 ford ranger xlt 4.0liter 4x2

The factory books aren't that specific. You just need the 97 Ranger book.

Check out ebay...

This was something I've been meaning to do... So I figured I would just do it today.

$20.13 for the complete manual and wiring diagrams. PDF on a thumb drive...

Have you ever used a fsm?

Well, yeah. Almost every day for the last 15 years.

The factory shop manuals will have information on all engines, transmissions, and 2wd and 4x4 front axle systems in the same book. They don't print one version for every possible combination of the truck.

Ford and their publishers hold their copyrights very tight. One little hint that someone has something out there for free and they are right on it. I think this website even had problems at one time with the word "Ranger" in the title didn't it? Looks like he got that worked out somehow.

Ebay is going to be the best. Even the other guy is taking a risk selling you a pdf copy.

One thing you can try, is your local library (if they are open). Some libraries can get them.

Also look for the CDs. They will have more than just the Ranger, but they are the same info as the hard copy books.

There are two types though, red ones and blue ones. The blue ones work forever. The red ones expire. They will still work, you just have to disconnect from the internet and set the date on your computer back to before the CD expired.

I have several of the cd's, and they don't work anymore on the newer computers. Something about 16 bit versus 32 bit file system or something. Anyway, the only way you can get them to work is to partition your computer in two and make half of it run on windows XP. Then it will run the old Ford CD's. I am not going through all that, so I have a old laptop I can get out when I need it. It's still a pain though.
