Recover in reverse/pulling in reverse


chain is fine for a steady pull...just don't tug with it,like when you give slack then run.

chain has no stretch,so damage can easilly happen to both vehicles.steady pulls it's a great way to go.
 
You just do what you gotta do. Use whatever means to get the job done and get it done safely. If when possible, it is best to pull going forward and using the trailer hitch. But mother nature sometimes doesn't allow us for that and thats why we use front tow hooks. For recovery of and other vehicles. Also, use tow straps without the metal hooks. A lot safer to use.

Make sure you use either the frame or a actual trailer hitch not the factory bumper hitch. They won't handle the kind of force of pulling out a stuck truck or car. I always used the frame just behind the rear bumper ther are a few holes that just fit a hook from a tow chain.

I have a Class III hitch, no worries there.

Gwaii, I don't tug unless absolutely necessary and when I do I know that I'm in danger of breaking stuff and take the risk knowingly. I would also never do any sort of tugging unless hooked to another truck on a very solid tow point.

i've had friends get badly hurt and killed from not respecting how dangerous a simple recovery can be.

just a matter of understanding what could go wrong and working to avoid those things.
 
i have been present at some deaths


usually straps and d rings. after math of a chain failure dropped a truck down a ravine another time. didnt see it but had to deal with it.

my children and wife understand this danger and i do a good bit of recovery. sad how ingnorant MOST people really are that venture off road.


reason i dont belong to a big local organization in mi is because of one of the big shots and me fighting over a recovery issue when i needed to get the morons out of the way of my local wheelin grounds.....you have to be a fuggin retard to tell a rough neck its impossible to safely recover a vehicle with a chain:shok:

Are you saying that you were telling him it is unsafe to use a chain for recovery, or he was telling you that? Because to me it seems that it is safer for the people involved to use a chain, but safer for the vehicle involved (less chance of breakage) using a strap.

I would say the only way a strap is really saving your truck is if you do something really dumb with the chain, or the strap breaks instead of ripping shit (bumper, ect) off your truck...

Safety for the people always comes before the vehicle. I only worry about vehicle safety after people are clear and taken care of. Which im sure you all agree, just wanted to throw that out there.

this is the biggest key to safety.

get the extra people out of the way.you get 8 people all buzzing around when trying to pull a stuck out,and someone's getting hurt.

the only people involved directly with the recovery are the driver of the tow vehicle and the driver of the stuck vehicle.

everyone else has to be out of the way.

Because chain has no "spring" it also cannot store energy.

the very real danger with chain is whan some idiot mixes chain with either a nylon tow
strap that WILL stretch (how much depends on the specific strap) or worse Winch cable

The OTHER danger from chain is that people buy CHEAP chain from a hardware store
or they buy "convenient chain" meaning 5/16" link chain that they don't have to really
bust their ass to move around...

Somewhere around here I have a 25foot length of 1/2" Series-80 chain.
what's it's load strength rated at? I don't know but I know that the frame
on any light truck will tear apart without getting anywhere near it's working
load limit let alone breaking strength rating...

Carrying that lenght of chain is a serious grunt... it weighs more than my transmission does.
