I have a 1990 Ranger 4x4 with 2.3l and the truck won't start. The alternator quit and burned up the plug on the alternator and I replaced both the alternator and the plug on the end of the harness. After the alternator was replaced the truck started and ran for about 3 minutes, then sputtered and cut off. I parked it for a while (about 2-3 months didn't have time to work on it). I got the truck back in the shop and started working on it and one day it started and ran, cut it off and it started and ran again, tried it a third time and it would crank but never start and run. I have replaced coil pack, ignition control module, and checked spark plugs. I have spark when I try to start it, but it will never start and run. (Its getting gas, can smell it at exhaust pipe after I've tried to start it.)

Shouldn't be any connected between alternator and a no start except for blown fuses or fusible links.

There are two 30amp fuses in engine fuse box, one for spark the other for fuel
There is also a main fuse for cab but I doubt starter motor would activate if it was blown.

2.3l twin coil engines did have issues with ICMs(ignition control modules), pre-1995
Intermittent spark
Also just FYI, only the coil/spark plugs on the exhaust side of engine work when cranking engine, intake side doesn't start working until RPMs are above 400

I would do the 50/50 test just to be sure
Pull off air tube from intake, open throttle and spray some starting fluid or gasoline into the intake.
Crank engine
If it fires up then dies fuel is the problem
If it doesn't fire up then spark is the problem.

50/50

Does the engine sound "normal" when cranking, timing belts do break on these engines
