Back to the original question. I personally (on my 2.9 anyway) ran 2 1/4" pipes with a cat and no muffler, and now have the same setup with a 24" thrush glass pack. Both ways sounded nice. No muffler was louder, the glass pack gives it a bit more throat and drone, but at a lower volume.
