Radar Detectors

I borrowed my cousins "Valentine 1" for a road trip I took a few years back. In the round trip I did I ended up with two friggin tickets both for something like 8-10 miles over and both in my home state. paid the fines and ever since then I set the cruise control at 2 maybe 3 (if I am feelin' crazy) over the posted sign. finally got the dang points off my license and have had a clean clear record for over 6 years now, and the best part is my insurance keeps dropping.

No offence, you guys can argue for your detectors all you want, use them and enjoy them. I personally don't think they are worth the money. Just my .04 worth. (got to account for inflation these days)

In VA, its legal to have one, but illegal to use it, i don't get that but ohh well

Virginia and DC are the only states with that rule. Virginia used to be a bit nastier; I don't know if they still are. The rule was that the detector couldn't be accessible to the driver, even if it was off.

And I always scratched my head about it when I lived in Maryland. So, when I cross the American Legion Bridge, I'm supposed to stop the car in the middle of the Beltway and put the radar detector in the trunk? What if I just missed my exit in Bethesda and hadn't planned to go to Virginia? And of course the DC line is a bit hard to spot in Maryland. It's just another street....

There used to be a reason for radar detectors during the national speed limit. It's been gone for a LONG time now, and speed limits almost everywhere are higher than they really need to be. Even Pennsylvania (long a nasty holdout) has the 65 MPH speed limit these days.

And radar/laser isn't the only way to confirm speeding. I've been caught twice in 25 years. Both times, with aircraft. Now the long distance highways are all 65-70 MPH in California, and it's really not necessary to speed at all (and kinda stupid in some spots).

my dad got pulled because there was a cop beside him and the cop pulled him because the cop said my dad was keeping up with him and he was doing 55 in a 45, the cop just admitted that he was speeding without his lights on, whats the deal with that

I'd take that one to court, probably a good chance of getting it dismissed.

they JUST started doing this on I-91 in the south deerfield area, and i'm sure further south like springfield. i've seen copters hovering high over the lane, and i thought it was just the local news getting a shot of all the holiday traffic or something. then the next day i saw a story in the local paper about the staties starting to do this... bummer! :black_eye:

Theres 3x very useful items to have with you, just in case.

1. Speedometer, follow it and do the limit or under. Never fails, never had a problem.
2. GPS. Not a must, but can act as a secondary back-up for accuarcy. And if you do get pulled over. You can show the cop your history of speed and possible give him doubts about the ticket. If not, its your proof in court.
3. Information (License, Insurance, Regrestration). Yes, this is required and is the absolute must. Don't have it, consider yourself SCREWED.

Cruise Control does help, but not all cars are equiped with it.

i have an old el-cheapo gps unit, it wont keep record of your speed but i have used it to verify that my speedometer is almost dead nuts

Thanks, too the guys that answered my question.:icon_cheers:

Never that I'm aware of. A few years ago Montana (only) eliminated speed limits on some highways during daylight hours but I think later they backed that down to 80.

I've never seen an 80 MPH speed limit anywhere in the US. I've seen 75 in remote desert interstates in places like New Mexico.

The Montanabahn only lasted a few years 'cause people got S T U P I D. It's 65 MPH now.

Resurrected this thread to see if anything new, more up to date has been posted. Lot of disinformation here.

I've run Escort exclusively for 30 years until I recently picked up a Bel RX65, which should be noted is an Escort division. I currently run these; Escort 8500 x50, Solo 2, and the Bel RX65 which I've just spent a couple of weeks evaluating....it and the x50 run a dead heat against each other, and major difference is the RX65 has voice alerts (announces radar band used). The S2's only advantage is it's the only good performing cordless on the market, but I only recommend it for those with extensive experience with detectors. It has 25% less sensitivity/range than the others, but more than adequate if you know what you're doing.

I'm itching to try a Valentine One but budget won't allow right now. However, I've recently been shot with LIDAR which none of the units I've mentioned will protect you from. They might as well just display, "You've been nailed!"

So far, 28 years citation free....Escort, CB, and often a scanner on board plus, common sense driving strategies.

This evening's 750' ISP encounter below where I'd have been deadwood dirty without the RX65:

I have a V-1, It will let you know where radar is being run, very few false positives. I don't normally speed, I had my cruise set at 9 over speed limit today, yes technically that is speeding but for the most part a judge won't convict so most cops don't write them.

I got 3 positive laser shots today on my way to knoxville. All it told me was, if I had been speeding, I just got a ticket.

Not only will they not defeat laser, but if you don't keep bait in front of you, instant on will get you as well. You gotta drive with respect, if not, don't bitch if you get a felony reckless endangerment LOL.

Bottom line, I want to make sure that if there is an officer running radar ahead, I'm not going to get shit holed by an ass hat. I'd just assume go along my business of getting to where I'm going at a reasonable speed without any hassles.

Oh, did I mention that I used to drive an Evo??? LOL

V-1 FTW.
