So I'm getting my 2001 ready to get on the road. I need to put rack in it and I have 2000, it's looking like its no the same part number from the listings I've seen. So I guess I'll need to order a new one. Have any if you done this swap? Is it compatible? Or should u just bite the bullet and buy one?

No idea. I'm about to figure out this install as I go since I haven't done one yet and my 98 Expo is leaking fluid from the rack.

Bilzy, let me tell you a little bit about rack leaks.

Ford knew they would leak, so they put low-point scavange tubes in the boots.
That's right, the rubber accordian boots scavange up the leaked fluid and put it back into circulation.

Chances are good that your "leak" is simply a bad boot. They are dirt cheap.
Downside is that the OTR has to be removed to replace it, but if you are meticulous and count your turns, you can do it without needing to get it realigned.

I've replaced the rack in my 2000 4wd (it was notchy coming off-center).
It is quite a job, but doable for the average DIY guy.

Just an FYI, Ford did make two different steering racks for 98+ trucks so that should explain the different part numbers. The regular cab Rangers got the same steering rack as the 2 door Explorers, while the extended cab trucks shared a rack with regular 4 door explorers. The extended cab Ranger/regular Explorer racks are slightly faster than the regular cab/2 door Explorer racks, but they should be interchangeable, so either one would work in a pinch.

Thanks for the replies. I got a junk yard one and put it in today.
