87 B2. Been driving it for about 3 months and the whole time runs great and strong.. Love the 2.9 But this morning going up the highway i started to hear a hissing and noticed a loss of power when i accelerate(struggles to hit 50kph in 3rd.. The hissing is coming from the drivers side engine compartment almost under the power steering or something. I cant find the fucken thing any suggestions?? anything to look for? Thanks anything helps!

What steps have you taken to find it? If you haven't tried yet, get some carburetor cleaner and spray every single vacuum line and connection you can find to help find the leak.

You might also unhook the brake booster and clog the vacuum line with some sort of obstruction (nothing that can get sucked in though) to verify it's not that.

Also, you might consider spraying between and around the upper/lower.

Honestly could be coming from anywhere. Vacuum gauge could confirm for sure as well, as the vacuum readings will be low at idle.

All else, get some rubber caps for the vacuum taps, and unhook and block off until you find it.

Found the leak. Theres a pipe coming off the intake manifold going down to the exhaust manifold and its broken right before the exhaust. no idea what its called lol. but going to get it fixed hopefully it doesnt cost a shit load. Thanks Psychopete for the reply

if u can get a junkyard pipe in good cnodition that is what i suggest, a new pipe from ford will cost u atleast 200

Took it to get it fixed and they wouldnt do it because they would have to take off the exhaust manifold and they also said it shouldnt be causing a lack of power and the reason for that is clogged catalytic converters. which makes sence cause air blows out of the hole when reving. so its 200 bucks to get the catalytic converters ripped out and new pipe in..

what.....they dont know what there talkin about, a leaky EGR pipe can and WILL cause power issues on a 2.9, id fix the egr pip first, and NO u do not have to remove the manifold to work on it, there just tryin to milk u for money considering the kind of job a egr pipe usually is

and, cats wont clog on a random occurance like this, if it was ud hear a rattling aswell from the innards breaking free

i took it to another shop, They told me it wasnt the catalytic converters cause ive got good flow.. They ran codes on it and it said the knock sensor isnt working and some error 89 KOR or LUS i cant remeber what it was. the knock code had to do something with timing.. but im getting so frustrated with this fucken shops telling me different things. its starting to get really old

What would happen if u just plugged both ends with some JB weld or something.. would it **** things up? doesnt the EGR just recycle warm air into the intake?

u could upgrade to a 88 computer without egr and eliminate the egr system, u would remove the pipe and insert a block off plug, and u would remove the EGR solenoid and valve and put a block off plate on the intake. ive done it before and have passed inspection with flying colors

You can just plug it up at both ends. On my '87 BII I used a pipe fitting cap and some muffler cement/metal epoxy on the exhaust manifold end, and bent the EGR pipe flat, crimped and sealed it on the EGR valve end. No need for an '88 computer (although it would be nice to have).

ive noticed that if u dont run the 88 computer u will not have the power that u should, and i guess i just like it lookin neat and tiday because defeating emissions equipment is a big no no in NJ

this all sounds good to me aslong as it saves me money and time.. so a hole in the EGR pipe would cause the engine to run like a bag of shit when accelerating and fine at idle

yep, u could just do some JB weld and patch up the hole on the EGR pipe, ive done that before, just make sure it has its FULL cure time
