Buckshot can be very effective * within its appropriate distance * , which is SHORT . Carefully selected loads, and custom choke tubes can stretch an extra 5-10yds, but the basic rule of thumb is Bow distances .

But unless a specific area Requires Buckshot only , use slugs instead . ANY slug will be effective just from the weight and diameter , your limiting factor will be accuracy .

Smoothbore think 50-75 yds .
Fully Rifled bore depends on the load . My prefered load ( BRI ) is a solid 125yd performer , and if hunting in a wooded area isn't much of a limiting factors . Some newer loads claim 200yd capabilities . Not saying they're lieing , but those loads do have inherent design tradeoffs .

Where I've hunt in PA your minimum shot is 50 yards and that's if you're EXTREMELY patient. (I'm not). Most of my shots have been taken at 100+. I'm very comfortable shooting to 200 yards with my m1a. I'm confident I could make a kill shot at 500 but practicality comes into play at that range.

With a shotgun, I probably would have never shot a deer in my life. I'm just not that good of a hunter. I'd rather take a deer at a distance than spend the time and effort it takes to effectively get one in shotgun/bow range. To me the larger the gap you put between you and the target the better shot you need to be but less hunting skill required.

Unfortunately in this state no one seems to have either shooting skills or hunting skills, etiquette, or morals...
