Do you use the electric fan plastic mounts that fit through the fins of the radiator? I didn't like the idea either, but started using it and it works fine with no damage to the radiator.

But if you need to change the radiator, you have to cut the plastic mounting. You can get new mounting kits in the store, but I am cheap and plus you might not be able to get to the store for some reason. If you keep decent sized wire ties on hand, what you can do is take the old round plastic buttons from the old kit you cut out, and drill a hole in the center large enough to accept your wire tie.

1. Stick the wire tie through the button till the button is against the head of the wire tie

2. Stick the button/wire tie through the radiator fins just like the original kit.

3. Once end of the wire tie/button sticking through the radiator and the fan, insert the other original plastic button over the wire tie, and then take another wire tie and insert the locking head end onto the wire tie that is through the radiator. Pull it tight. Do all 4 like this.

4. Cut off the excess wire tie lengths. Seems to work just as well as the original system does.

Well, you wouldn't have to wear them, but I do appreciate such a level of preparedness.

I realize this thread is about OLD tricks and hacks, but since invention of the serpentine belt, being a transvestite has become a personal choice, not one of automotive preparedness. Don't make excuses, you be yourself and be proud!

Here's one I mention and use often. When detailing I use a wooden bbq skewer stick with or without a polishing cloth over it to clean out all the cracks with out scratching anything.

a shot of gunk engine degreaser, then use brake cleaner to spray off the degreaser.

I also found out that WD-40 breaks it up pretty good too.
