Old Fuel Guage & New Sender = wrong reading?

OK, I know that the guage that I have in my factory 84 dash operates on a 10 - 75 ohm range but the sender from my 91 EFI tank reads something like 240 - 30 ohm range so I am getting the wrong reading on my guage. Does anyone know what the guage in like an 86 or 87 EFI ranger reads? Maybe I can just swap the guage from a newer, but same style cluster, into my old cluster.

I want to keep the stock guages if anyone knows how to fix this problem. Preferably without having to drop the tank again. Thanks

The sender ohm changed with the dash, so '89 and later, 88 and older.

That's what I thought. I don't want to have a guage on the dash that don't work so looks like I'm making a trip to the junkyard this weekend to tear apart some 90's ford clusters to find a guage that fits. I read the schematic and with a little soldering I should be able to wire up the slosh module, cover it in heatshrink, and stuff it in the dash. If my retrofit works I post up some pics next week.

Here are the pics of my modified fuel guage. I took out the old guage from my 84 cluster and ground out the posts to make the backing smooth. Then I took the guage from a 91 ranger and pulled off the needle and cut the section of clear plastic away from the black plastic face. I glued the Clear plastic section to the old guage face. I peeled the sticker off the newer face and marked where the light needed to shine through the sticker and drilled the old face plate out before glueing the sticker down. I cut the printed circuit board off where it connected to the old guage. I drilled holes in the cluster and pushed the 3 pins in the guage through the back and cut them off about 1/8" long and soldered the power ground and signal wires directly to the guage. I took the slosh module from the newer cluster and wired it inline with the guage signal wire and power wires and wired it into the dash then I covered it with heatshrink from an R/C car battery pack. Luckily I had a fuel pump and sender from a 89 bronco 2 that I wired up temporarily to set the needle back on the guage in the right place then I filled the tank just to double check it. It works great and looks better than I thought it would. I hope this helps others trying to keep their dash original.
