Same old problems, thinking fuel related

Giving it a day or two to be sure, but it definitely looks like the strainer was the problem. Ran great with the new one.

Is this a case of " no news, is good news " ? or what ??

For now, Ive just thought that its gone away so many times that Im waiting til after a couple days of driving to be sure.

Good to hear, fingers are crossed for ya.. :)

Well, so far the engine lights still coming on. And its done it a couple times, but extremely shortly. basically right after it starts acting up and I pop in in to neutral its gone. Im thinking that replacing the strainer seriously helped, because so far its barely done it at all, and so far from as drastically as it was acting. Im still thinking there are some shot sensors. Im going to be taking codes again tomorrow, im suspecting a bad O2 sensor, even if its just been fouled from the problems themselves. And possible the TPS, because when the CEL comes on, it happens right after i take my foot off the gas peddle.

The O2 sensors data is only used by the ECM after engine warms up to normal operating temperature.

If the issue happens when engine is both cold or hot then probably not O2 related.
If it only happens after warm up then that could be the problem.

This is a good read about O2 sensors

if you are really wanting to "get involved" in the 2.9's electronics and sensors...

here

The above has a link to a downloadable PDF, that I put up a while back, on fords EEC-IV all 481 pages of it...

READ the instructions, the file needs to be renamed once downloaded, (and I would also virus scan, even though it's my file in the first place....)

Thanks man, I think I actually have that already downloaded for this very reason. I wouldn't necessarily say I "want" to get involved, haha. But if this doesn't clear up I don't have many other options.

If I had to guess? It got better when you replaced the sock...But did the pump sustain any damage due to the obstruction? It might have put some undue stress on it..

Might be time for a pressure and volume test on the fuel system.

Alright, I got codes coming from my TPS, and read into it in that 400 page electronics manual. As it says, "a higher resistance in VREF results in lower voltage input, tending to cause lean mixtures and misfires." Now judging by my lean codes, misfires, and codes from the TPS about insufficient voltage input, and and a couple other symptoms, I see this as the only thing left to fix. Maybe of course.
Im going to be testing the sensor more directly first.

Quoted the wrong person, sorry.
I don't doubt that it could have sustained damage. But personally I think the pumps are running fine.

No problem.

(consider yourself lucky. I changed our fuel tank last year--the fuel sock wasn't installed on the pump when we pulled it out.)

Update - Unless it starts acting up again, its fixed.
Replacing the TPS did the trick, its just weird that I was only getting codes specifically relating to that after changing the strainer. In any case, I think that anyone that has a very intermittent bog and loss of power should at least check the tank and strainer to make sure that everything is clean and in working order. Thanks to everyone who posted in this thread and helped give me ideas.

Excellent !
I know that this problem is a nasty one, I'm really glad, it's off your plate.
