I like to remove the radiator, fan, clutch, all accessories, and water pump before even attempting to pull an engine. That gives you lots of room in front.
The Y-pipe will only come off with liberal pounding with a strong impact wrench, or with an oxy torch (on the bolts).
As for the distributor hold-down, use a U-joint 1/2 inch socket. You can get a special U-shaped wrench to do it if you like.
