tachometer quit check engine

I need help desperately. I'm on vacation, driving cross country. I fueled up and upon leaving, I noticed my tachometer wasn't working. Within minutes the check engine light came on and it started sputtering like it was going to stall. If I shut it off, it runs fine for about two minutes. Till no tachomerter though. I've been driving for hours with no problems then all of the sudden.... Anyway, 94 4.0L. I could use any help. My dad's a mechanic in MI but unfortunatly he's unavailable and I'm in CA. I'm not the best with trucks so any advice would be very helpful.

If I had to guess, I'd guess Ignition Module (ICM).

It is a common failure item and provides the electronic signal for spark and tachometer.

You should find it on the radiator support, near the driver side headlight.
