As that transmission was discontinued at the end of the 1987 model year, it is 29 years old...

and you ask is it on it's way out?

I'll tell you "Extinct" would be a better description...

I have the same problem. I want to see if anybody has rebuilt one. I read there are special bearing pullers / installers to do the job. you probably have bad counter shaft bearings, I have one in and 1 on the ground I pulled a while back, both bearings are gone.

The countershaft bearings are not the usual failure.

The mainshaft/input-shaft bearing is a BALL BEARING
and under load the transmission generates "thrust loading" on that bearing

and given sufficient miles/age the inner race of that bearing basically falls apart.

As you are dealing with a 29 year old transmission for which parts have been unavailable
for 20 years....

I gave up trying to do anything with the T-K trans more than 10years ago...
