I never had any problems maintaining speed with my B2 in 5th gear flat and even slight up hills provided I was over 60mph. I could get some accel flat but usually used 4th.
I would run a solid 22mpg on the highway and even 20.5mpg with the hubs locked in 2WD(about one third of my driving).
I once got a set of free tires, a bit smaller. I found my mpg went up from 22mpg to 24mpg with those tires. But the strangest thing happened, that 600 mile trip to ohio was now 660 miles!!! Good thing I was getting that extra full economy eh?
I average 23 mpg. The biggest letdown was going from the FM145 5th gear to the M5OD 5th gear. The newer tranny really lugs the engine, multiplied with the taller tires it certainly doesn't help.
I definately believe the 4.10 gear would be the ideal route to go... that would be long term though and by then I will have likely swapped in a 4.0 or do something crazy like a Supercharged 3.8.
I can't leave anything alone!
I was just glad I'm not alone in the 2.9 anemic territory. I was planning on taking my ATV from Northern Colorado to Las Vegas for some fun in the Sun next Spring... not sure I want to make that long of a trip in 4th gear only going 70 mph.
What I do find, however, is one day the engine is perfectly fine doing 65+ in 5th gear. Really holding it's own and then on another day on the same stretch of road it will barely muster 55 and I have to shift down. I wouldn't think that slight of a headwind would make THAT much of a difference.
