Some new Ohio laws take affect today:

one is you have to turn on headlights when wipers are on for rain-you'll only get a warning if caught with out 'em on, tickets will come later.

Second you must now move over a lane when passing a tow truck or utilty truck on the side of the road-$300 for first offence

and first of July they are raising speed limit for semi trucks from 55mph to 65 mph on the interstates here in Ohio.

I always hated that speed limit difference in Ohio. It was dumb having different speed limits for the same road. You are getting stuck behind semi's passing other semi's all the time.

Those laws actually aren't as bad as I was prepared for them to be.

I especially like the first one, although it's a damn shame that it even need to be a law for people to do it. It's like the seat belt law. Too many idiots are "too cool for seatbelts" and will only wear it because it's the law - not because it will save their life. It drives me absolutely crazy when there's a thunderstorm or a blizzard or heavy fog and there are losers driving around with no lights on. The last thing these people are concerned about is their own safety or the safety of anyone else. As if since the clock doesn't read midnight there's no reason to turn their lights on, regardless of what the conditions are at noon. That's why so many cars have running lights now - too many morons can't think for themselves and need babysitters. Okay, I'm done ranting....

The second one is good because you always hear about people on the side of the road getting mowed down, whether it's cops or a dude trying to change a tire.

The third one is good because it should help the flow of traffic.

Thanks for posting this. I'm in and out of Ohio on a regular basis so this stuff is good to know....

Yea the laws aren't that strick here in Ohio as long as you have working lights and its registered and you have ins. You can drive it.

Yes sir, these are some laws I agree with! I thought that moving over one lane was courtesy. The times they are a changin'

I wish Ohio would pass a law that says keep in the right lane unless you're passing someone. :icon_twisted:

I was just getting ready to post that. What's worse is when you have to pass to get around someone when you're going the speed limit. I am not sure why people in Ohio drive so slow, yet Michigan people drive like they're life depends on getting somewhere as fast as possible. And what in the hell is the deal with the front license plates? :D Easier for cops to spot and pull over an out-of-stater?

Pete

I hate the front licese plate I wish we didn't need them. Not all drivers are slow here in Ohio but most are, one moment i remember me and a buddy of mine went to California for vacation speed limit is 75mph on interstates and everyone drove that or under. It was annoing well after we flew back we were driving home from Columbus and we were doing 75 in the slowlane and being passed on the left we were both glade to be back in Ohio.

I actually prefer not wear my seat belt because I have had several friends DIE because they were wearing their seat belts, thanks but no thanks. However I do agree with the lights thing, I ran home with mine on today just because it is overcast right now.

I can't understand why the auto manufacturers don't make a change so that when you turn on the wipers the lights come on automatically. As for getting killed because they wore a seatbelt, the stats don't lie. More people die because they didn't have it on than because they did. And it's not even close.

I have no idea what to say to that....
First, I'm sorry you lost several friends. I'll understand if you don't want to discuss it, but I'm curious as to how you know for a fact that a seat belt is directly responsible for a death, and how you know they would have been guaranteed to otherwise survive had they not been wearing it.

I agree with Dave here. I'll take my chances with it on. That applies to any vehicle at any time, but especially in a Ranger where I have 2" of headroom max.

Ya no joke, if you died in an accident wearing your seat belt it was pretty horrific in the first place and you probably would have had a slim chance of survival anyway. I'd rather stay in the vehicle than be ejected through the windshield. We have a law here in NC about lights on when wipers on but noone seems to understand it. That, and people drive around after dark with only parking lights on. It's ridiculous...

I had the exact opposite experience during my visit to southern California. I was going 80-85 just to keep up with traffic in the middle lanes (5+ lane highway). People in the far left were blasting past me. I'd guess 95-100.

The speed limit in IA on the interstate is 70mph, cruising at 72/3 I get passed way more often than I pass others, and they usually do not crawl by either. I would say that over half of the poeple that pass me are doing 80 or better.
