I never really paid attention to these things until a few years ago when I was in Arizona in '05. The way people drive there really stood out to me. The whole state is much more mellow, and so are the drivers. From what I observed, hardly anyone would speed recklessly, and damn near everyone there seems to know what a turn signal is for. What a shock! Ever since then, I pay more attention to the way people drive in different states. Of all the states I've been to, the Mitten is by far the worst. We also have the worlds worst roads. Funny, when I'm on I-75 headed toward Ohio, the pavement is absolutely awful, but the second you pass under the "Welcome To Ohio" sign, it becomes immaculately smooth. There's a few different reasons for this, but it all boils down to Michigan having it's proverbial head up it's own ass.
Speaking of Arizona, I spent two weeks there on my last trip down. It seemed like the only domestic car around was my rental Impala. The majority of the pickups I saw were Toyota and Nissan. Someone who's never been to Michigan would probably be shocked at just how many F-Series and Ranger trucks there are around here. They definitely dominate Michigan, hence the "Ford Country" comment.
As far as the few people who've tried to justify not wearing a set belt go, it just sounds like excuses to me......
