My idea of a Shelby Ranger if there would have been one.

when you replace a TPS, you still have to set the idle voltage... the mustang 302's idle voltage was .98v i don't know what the ranger's one is

Yes, you do. And I think your correct. Its .9-.99v I belive. But your haynes manual will tell you what it should be.

When it comes to the Evap system , I have no idea how it works and what it does.

Sorry

The evap system catches fumes from the gas tank, and stores it untill the engine is run. When running it shoots the gas fumes into the intake to release them. Gas fumes are not supposed to be allowed into the atmosphere, so thats why the evap system is in place. Unless its tottaly bunged up, and pumping tons of air into the intake, it shouldnt effect mpg or power.

So, that would explain why the gas caps are not suppose to vent and be able to pressure a fuel tank?!?

does the fumes get sucked in by vacuum??, if it does, would a bad line cause a vacuum leak that would affect the mpg??

also would a bad gas cap also cause a vacuum leak and mess with the mpg ???

Dang I believe I prefer a older truck before they came out with this setup, IF all of that above can affect the mpg and running of the engine.

I'm getting a headache, I have to go and lay down now.

Robert

bad gascap will throw an odb II code, which i believe will clear it's self if fixed within xx miles

I'm gonna replace the vapor can and purge valve along with the vac lines.. I could smell a strong odor of stale gas under the hood at times so I hope it helps.. What is with the setting TPS voltage you guys were talking about? better yet how do you do it?

I need to know how to do this also, I have to replace the TPS on my Father-In-Laws 94 Explorer, it has a dead spot in it.

Robert

from what I read you put the screws in and leave a little loose then turn it to the proper closed idle voltage using a volt meter.. My Snap On scanner shows voltage on the TPS so I'd assume I can use it in place of a volt meter? Once the voltage is correct tighten the screws and call it a day... If this is the correct method

I thought they where keyed, where they only fit in one spot on the shaft?!?!

Now I'm really confused.

Any who, I hope you get your Truck running good, I might not know much but I do know you have one good looking, sexy truck.

Robert

Again, I've never delt with the tps on a ranger, but the tps on a mustang (89) is as follows,

You will need a Phillips screwdriver, sewing needle, voltmeter, and possibly a small file

Find the "signal" wire from the tps, I don't recall what it was on the mustang, possibly green? Pierce the wire with the sewing needle, set voltmeter to dc volts 0-10v setting, (you want 2 decmal places) turn ignition to "on" but do not start. Put positive lead on the sewing needle, Which is still sticking out of the insulation (and making contact with the wire inside) put the neg lead to ground, check voltage, if it is not the proper reference (fully closed) voltage, adjust by loosening one screw, and turning the sensor each way, to get it as close as possible, tighten that screw, repeat with other (one tight screw helps insure you don't move it while tightening)

If the reference voltage is out of the range of the tps, remove tps from vehicle, and take a small amount of plastic out of the screw holes, so that the tps will turn farther. Re-install and repeat above steps.

Getting the EXACT voltage can be done, just be patient

I would also highly recommend that you clean your throttle body with a throttle body cleaner, and some sort of rag, or sponge, before you set the tps voltage, as if the throttle plate is stuck open just a little, it will change the voltage slightly

True they are keyed to fit on the shaft but being able to "rotate" it a little on the two screws is what sets the voltage... I just checked and reset mine yesterday..

Well I went this morning and picked up new vapor canister, new purge valve Solinoid and TPS.. Will insatall tonight, fill her up and see what she does....

I have asked that to a few mechanics, and they all said no, that it shouldnt effect milage or power. But im not sold that it wont. But cant garentee that it wont either. For how cheap the whole setup is to replace, Id just change it or fix it. My caddy has an issue with this, and is really over pressuring the gas tank on warm days, and need to adress it. Havnt seen a change in milage or power since this has become an issue. 94 Fleetwood with a LT1 350 in it.

Ok, let us know how it goes.
