My 4.0l Ranger is horrible on gas. Want to swap with 2.3l. Can it be done?

Some of you guys are comparing the 4.0 sohc to the ohv there is a huge difference in fuel economy the sohc is much more efficient of an engine allowing to get much better fuel economy and to the original poster thats not really surprising if it has over 300k miles on it.

My 4.0 in my BII averages 18mpg...

You want fuel economy? Get a vehicle that is designed to get good gas mileage. No sense in swapping motors out.

My 94 ext cab 2wd 4.0 gets 20 mpg, I love it. My BII gets close to 30 if I keep my foot out of it, but where's the fun in that. It also may depend on the type of gas ur burning. If u use gas w 10% ethanol, u will get less mileage and it will clean gunk out of ur tank and clog ur filter. U might wanna start by doing plugs wires and filters.

SO what are you wanting to mess up the truck for?

My B2 get's 13-14mpg town and 20-21 highway. That's all they get I'm afraid. My crewcab diesel gets 18 town so I stopped driving the B2. And when diesel went up to $5/gallon a couple years ago, I eased into the Honda that gets 38mpg town. I may get bullied by Subaru drivers, but it feels great to drive 380 miles on a tank and only put 10 gallons back in it.

If you already have an efficient car, the solution is in place. Drive the truck on the occasions you need it, and take the car the other 95% of the time. I do the same thing, only to a little more drastic degree. 70mpg motorcycle when I can spare the truck (I don't need it that often). Why worry about getting 13mpg occasionally when you can get twice that (or more) in a car in daily driving?

We have a car and truck. The car is old, but still gets great mileage. We use it more than the truck unless it's just me, then I just use the truck.
