So here is the skinny. I need to swap the Jeep Rubicon wheels that are on it now due to a crack in one of the front wheels. I purchased some 17" mustang wheels for 2005-2014 from someone on craigslist. According to the measurements the should fit without a spacer. Anyone have any advice before I try it on saturday?

Most Rangers I see with Mustang Wheels, usually have the front center caps off because the wheel bearing dust covers poke out too far

Depending on which version of Mustang wheels you purchased, the 4x4 front hub may not fit through the center hole.

I figured i will end up having to take off the center cap especially with the 4x4 hub

Im hoping that they will fit through based off the measurements the mustang rims I purchased have a center bore of 70.6 which is the same as the 86 2.9 4x4.

That is the style of wheel it is. I know for sure I will have to remove the cap for the front. I will post an update tomorrow night after I try it

Guess I missed the 4wd part.

I believe you will find that the center cap opening on those wheels is not large enough diameter to allow the 4x4 hub to fit through. They fit fine on the later 4x4 (99+) where they do not have the disengaging hubs, but not on the earlier ones.

So the mustang rims did not work. I did not know there was an adapter on there which i did not have a thin enough socket to take off. Even if i did manage to take them off the 4x4 hub will not fit. Looks like im going to have to try and resell the mustang rims. I should have figured that it had an adapter on it since it has jeep rubicon wheels on it. Well back to hunting. Any suggestions of wheels that should fit?

Are you trying to reuse the tires from the Jeep wheels? If so... you will just have to experiment and probably end up with spacers or adapters again.

I personally would just buy a set of wheels/tires that actually fit the truck. I know I would be happier in the long run.

Okay so herr is the update. I found a set of 16"rims off of an explorer at pull-a-part The lug pattern will allow me to remove the adapter. And the center hole is 2 3/4 which should give it plenty of room for the 4x4 hub.

So next update. I was able to get the mustang rims on the 86. I had to bore out the lip used to hold in the center cap. I was able to get the wheels on. Now the problem is the rear wheels are touching a bracket so tomorrow I need to obtain spacers to pull them Back enough so they are no longer touching then i will be good

Those wheels, depending on if you got them from a 05-10 or 11+, will need either a .75" or 1.00" spacer/adapter to get to the right position on the Ranger. I have a 1.25" adapter on my Ranger because I didn't want to cut studs shorter to fit, but some people are fine with doing that. My wheels are spaced out .25" wider than stock which is no problem. An adapter is way better than a spacer, and if you use more than about a .25" spacer you need longer studs on most vehicles. I got the adapters that have the right hub bore so they center on the hub like they should and I strongly recommend that approach. fleabay is your friend for that kind of stuff.

Just make sure to use some blue LokTite on the lugnuts holding the adapters on. While I've never had them come off, I have checked them when the wheels are off and have found them looser than when I originally installed them. One time, and I use the LokTite now, every time. You can't check them like you can the nuts holding the wheels on. Better safe than sorry. I use 1.5s on the back of, my AHEM, other vehicle, since it has widened stock rims and all the extra width is to the inside.
