My 99 3.0 is very week as we all know. I am wondering if anyone has done anything to these motors to make it stronger. I do not want super horsepower and I do not do any major four wheeling, but the truck is just horrible. I would like to increase the torque more than anything else. I do pull a small trailer or a boat on occasion and you have to slip the hell out of the clutch to get it moving and I hate to do that. I'm not against going into the motor. The truck came to me used and alseady had a K&N air filter, any help would be great. Thanks

well porting the heads and a good valve job helps a lot , but to do it correctly you'd need to do the intakes, and the heds and get headers for it if they make them for a 3.0 helped my 2.9 tremedously

Most people I've ever met who had complaints about the 3.0 engine
were either:

Afraid to drive it like it needs to be driven, the 3.0 Vulcan is a revvy little
bitch that needs to spin to do anything, peak torque doesn't happen until
3000rpm and the power peak is at 5000.
(what mystifies me with these facts in mind how people can think a SHO3.0
would be any fun at all in a Ranger)

Are driving it with the wrong gears (too tall), hey, a 3.0 2wd with 215/70-14 tires "needs" 4.10 gears, someone complaining about a 4x4 wearing 235/75-15's
with 3.45 gears isn't at all difficult to understand.

Or some combination of the two above.

While a 3.0 is a less than ideal engine for a ranger driving
it "outside it's performance envelope" only makes it worse.

the difference between the 2.9 and the 3.0 only proves what
I've been saying for years:

"People think they want power, but what they really want is torque.
It's just most people don't know the difference at a gut level"
