I just received my shift bushing kit, took out and disassembled the old one. after putting the new bushings and shift fork in I noticed my transmission is now stuck into 1st gear! Drove it around the block, tried shifting but its locked into place. What can I do to diagnose this problem

It is quite a common mistake, nothings broken

You need to have the transmission(shifter) in Neutral when you remove the shifter and then in Neutral when you put it back in.

Make sure tires are blocked
Remove shifter again
Look down inside trans and you will see 3 bars(Shift bars that hold the shift forks)
each bar has it's own slot for the shifter
These 3 slots need to be lined up, that is when trans is in Neutral(you know how you can move the shifter side to side a long way in Neutal, thats because all the slots are lined up :))
You may need to have someone rock the truck so you can shift the 1/2 shift bar out of first.
Pushing the clutch in can help but pressure from the drive line can hold it tight.

Last picture here shows the slots: http://www.therangerstation.com/Magazine/winter2007/shifterbushings.shtml
