M5OD Manual Transmission in My Automatic 1987 Bronco II

Hi, can I use any 4x4 4l M5OD in my 1987 Bronco II? It currently has an automatic. Can I use any Ranger 4l M5OD from 1988-2011? Does it matter if it’s from a OHV 4l or SOHC 4l? Thanks for any information.

Yes, 2.9l and 4.0l used same block so have same transmission bolt pattern
And same transfer case bolt pattern as well

1987 4x4 had speedometer cable on transfer case, so yes a 4x4 M5R1 from a 4.0l 1990-2011 would work, OHV and SOHC have same patterns
1998 and up transfer cases do not have speedometer cable hook up, in case it comes up

You should do the flywheel, clutch and starter motor upgrade

I think the 1987 driveshafts will still be correct length
