My mpg is around 21 80/20 highway/city and i am constantly smelling the odor of gas when i come to a stop. When i fill the tank some gas comes spilling out when it gets full. I am wondering before i go into depth looking into it, are there any trouble areas on these tanks ('90 2.3l 5sp) that are prone to leaking etc? I changed the spark plugs, oil filter, filled tires, and the mpg still sucks so i have to think it is from the leak. Any insight is appreciated, thanks. :icon_confused:

Im in the same boat, I get around 20mpg or so and when i fill up all the way it smells like gas, but it doesnt spill out.

Ive had the same problem in my 96 2.3, when i would fill up gas would spill out when the tank got topped off so I unbolted the bed and jacked it up to check the top of the tank. turns out right where the fuel tank neck joins to the tank the rubber was all cracked and split real bad. so ive been looking for a new or "in good shape" used tank neck but no luck so far, ive just been makin sure i dont fill up all the way lately.

New necks are $70 on eBay. I did it last Feb. No problems, neck is holding up fine.

Yup, right at the mouth where the gas nozzle went in. Lost quite a bit every time I filled up with gas.

i just dealth with this problem. my filler neck was cracked and leaking right at where it mounts to the tank.

i bought my replacement from ebay for $90 shipped. i have a 96 fleetside, so the appropriate ford part # was F47Z9034P, which is what i searched for on ebay.

i unbolted the bed and got some help sliding it backward about a foot to expose the hose mounting point, slapped on the new hose, bolted the bed back on, and that was it! very easy repair, and very nice to have the check engine light off and to not spill gas all over the place when i fill up now. worth the $90 and 1 hour of labor.

on a side note, my mechanic quoted me $700 to do this repair. :P

The filler neck problem seems like a common problem, I just replaced mine. It was pretty bad.

This is really an easy repair, just lift the bed of the truck, replace the hose and put the bed back. A friend of mine has an overhead lift in his garage and made this a 30 minute job.

I got the new part from Autoandart for around $45 and that included shipping.
