Hi, I recently purchased a 1994 Ranger 4.0 5spd 2wd pickup and have noticed a few problems. My first problem that I will ask about is the fluid that is leaking on a seal around the transmission close to the drive shaft. Little drops build up on the bottom of this seal. I'm learning to be more mechanically inclined so anything could help. Also the fluid looks dark red and i was told that its supposed to be gear oil, but its not, so the wrong fluid might have been put into it before i got it.....? Lets see if i can explain this better. So there's transmission, ?seal?, what could be part of transmission, and then drive shaft. Its after the seal that i cant explain if its part of the tranny or a drive shaft box....?

rear output shaft seal. this fluid is SUPPOSED to be red because that transmission requires automatic transmission fluid as lube.

you'll need a 12point 12mm wrench, a seal puller, a small hammer, and a seal or 2 in case you destroy it the first time trying to install. they cost about 2-3 dollars

set the parking brake and raise the truck if you need to. put a pan under the front of the driveshaft to catch any oil that spills. mark the driveshaft flanges and remove the driveshaft.

then use the seal puller to remove the old seal.

use a large socket or something similar that matches the size of the metal ring of the seal and GENTLY tap the new seal in a alternating circular motion until it sits flush with the transmission tail housing.

after you're done lube the lip of the seal with new mercon ATF and reinstall the driveshaft.

remove the fill plug of the transmission and top off the fluid with the truck sitting level.

clean off all the oil and take a drive, then check for leaks

Okay I am confident that I can do this. I have replaced timing belts, ball joints, etc as needed, so my skills come as needed. Thank you.
