Does anyone know someplace that sells k&n intake kits cheap? the only place i cand find that sells them is Summitracing and i know they are usually overpriced on some things.

You can look on Craigslist .org. Around here guys are seeing how dirty their engine is getting from them things and they sell em pretty cheap on there.. If all you drive is on clean streets I guess it is Ok to use one of those.. But for offroad use they are almost as bad as no filter at all..
Just so you'll know, racing cars don't use them things.. Look under the hood of any NASCAR racer and you will find a stock type filter.

There is absolutely no advantage to them, the OEM setup is a true CAI, and will flow way more air than the engine will pull. The disadvantage is passing oil & dirt into your engine, contaminating MAF sensor, and gumming up thottle body, and IAC valve.

it shows a 6.88hp gain for my truck

Don't waste your money. Your truck comes with a Cold air intake from the factory. If anything putting a K&N cold air intake on a ford ranger will give it a hot air intake. Since the ranger sucks the air from behind the passenger headlight. The K&N sucks it from right beside the exhaust manifold. =>

Now if you are aiming for a Kewl Sound intake then proceed. but you gain nothing but noise.

Go here:

http://www.knfilters.com/cold_air_intakes.htm

and you can find a location near you that sells the product.

There are a couple of dicks on here that are self proclaimed K&N police, and always offer their UNPROFESSIONAL, UNSOLICITED opinions on the merits of the products even tho that wasn't your question.

I haven't checked under the hood of every car/truck raced in NASCAR, so they may or may not have K&N filters. I do know if you go to the drag races, K&N's are everywhere on engines costing thousands of dollars. So wtf does that prove?????

They don't have a clue as to whether the filter will make any change to your truck or not. It's your money and your truck. Do what you want.:)shady

Shady, a dragster's engine only has to last 1/8 or 1/4 of a mile.......So,
Most dragsters don't use an air filter at all!! And Shady, OEM engines cost
thousands of dollars.........

And Shady, this is probably the highest priced dragster, I have ever seen, and notice, NO AIR FILTER!!!

I'm just going to say use what you want. If you are a person that doesn't believe they work then fine and vise versa. I've seen threads run on about people arruging non-stop about them, showing them testing them, etc...

I say to everybody, its your vehicle, drive it the way you want and put what you want on it.

Asking other people for their opinions about "performance enhancers" on here will get you a million other opinions and may never answer your question(s).

I was also thinking about getting a throttle body spacer to go with it. What do those do excatly? Basically i want to put some bolt on perfomance goodies on this truck and I've heard alot of good things about the K&n kits until now so does anybody have any other suggestions as too what to get?

On certian types of vehicles, a throttle body spacer helps the gas mix with the air better. Basiclly gives more time for them to mix. Other types have a twist built into them that claims to make the air entering denser by it twisting/turning it "giving you more HP and torque", whether it is true or not im not sure.

As for the K&N, I would do it. For every good thing you hear about a product theres always somebody right there to say a bad thing about it.

I look at it like this. Your lungs can only take in so much air at a time just like a piston. I see a paper filter as a straw you are trying to take air through. You have to work harder to get the amount of air you need to fill your lungs in a set amount of time. If you look at performance filters (K&N, AEM, Banks, Airaid, etc...) as you having two straws in your mouth that you are sucking through then you can fill your lungs faster in a set amount of time with less trouble.

But notice how I never said that your lungs (piston) can take in more air because they cant, they are at a set size. I'm just saying its easier to get it in.

If people dont like the oil from a K&N but want a performance filter then get an oil less performance filter like AEM or Airaid.

Redrider11 if you want to put a K&N air intake system on your vehicle then go right ahead and do it, I'm not going to stop you, I would do it too.

As for the example of sucking through a straw, that presumes several factors, first that the straw really is smaller than needed

Reality is that you can breath quite well through a 1" tube
(look at a snorkel)

will a 2" tube make it easier to breath?

As for TB spacers?
Last spring I saw a throttle body spacer on a 4.0.

I was amused at the time.

I was less amused when I finally thought of a use for it and
someone had already taken it.

What was this "use" for it?

I thought it would be a splended way to mount a single N.O.S.
brand fogger nozzle without drilling a hole in my intake.

if u want a little more growl, then remove the air box muffler/silencer... then maybe throw in a k&n FILTER...

Thanks for the comments. Are there any other bolt on goodies though? I'm thinking about getting headers once i do some other stuff like the intake. How hard are headers to put on? As long as you dont have to pull the motor i think i can do it.

Okay we're going to say a Mcdonalds straw. Can't believe I had to dumb it down that far. I'm not saying you cant breath through a 1 inch tube easily. In my example I'm saying its easier with two straws, performance fiter, then one, paper filter, and the easiest way is with your mouth wide open A.K.A. no straw/filter if I can say it like that and everybody understand me.
