Just won't go in

Just a couple thoughts. I agree that the shaft probably isnt going into the pilot bearing. Also, I spent a LONG time trying to get the transmission to make, and found it was a cable connector at the top of the engine getting in the gap.

Good luck.

You are so close! The main thing is that for the input shaft to slide into the pilot bearing, the transmission case has to be exactly squared up with the engine. Tilted even a little will do that and I can tell by picture #3 that your tailhousing is too high. Usually when I'm at the point you are, I get a hold of the trans by the tailhousing and lift, push, drop, push, side to side, push... don't do it on a creeper, you need the leverage from your body pushing against the ground and not trying to roll away. At some point it will just slide together and you will know instantly that you got it.

It's a pain in the dick no matter what. I did my first one in a gravel driveway at night so that the manager of the trailer park I lived in wouldn't come over and yell at me for working on vehicles. I think that's when my neighbors starting referring to me as "the swearing guy." 😄😄
THANX!!!! I will do that tomorrow. lift, push, drop, push, side to side, push. Lol. I will do that!!!

I had that problem as well!! Lol Finally got it out of the way tho. Ty for that!

Hmmm.... must be your first ranger.
Actually it is!! I took it because the guy said "if you can get it running,it's yours" so I got it running and now fixing it up. I run a handyman business so I needed a second truck.

The 3rd picture shows the trans at a bad angle in relation to the engine block.
If the throwout bearing is installed correctly it should not touch the pressure plate without the trans bolted to the block and the clutch at least partially engaged.
I'm not familiar with the later year Ranger slave cylinders, but I know that on the 1st gen Rangers the throwout bearing snaps into position under spring pressure, and if it isn't snapped into place it will extend much closer to the pressure plate.

I would check the throwout bearing/slave cylinder assembly to be sure it's installed correctly. I don't think the disk will install backwards, but I could be wrong.

Telle your thought on this post. No one else has said anything like that.....

I looked at the pictures too... he is right... bad angle. It's been so long since I've done one of these I called in someone to double check me. I personally thought the throw out bearing was all the way out on the operating sleeve and needed to be moved rearward. So I am in agreeance with what Paulos says.

Sorry, I missed where @Shran already mentioned the angle of the trans in picture #3.
The throwout bearing isn't supposed to contact the pressure plate until you engage the clutch. If it did, it would essentially be "riding the clutch" all the time, and you would prematurely wear out the throwout bearing.

Ok. I didn't realize I was supposed to compress it. It is fully extended. So do I just press it down and it will stay?
