I'm new here and building a v8 ranger

pryme,

Did you get a new oil pickup?

I guess one could always modify the pan to accept a dipstick...
Yes, same exact kit....I think I paid 180 from summit. Free shipping. When u put the new pick up on it, ull need to make sure u pull the right cap bolt and make sure to torq it back to spec...I think it's 85 ft lbs. Then, the gasket can be a pain but take ya time n it'll seat properly. Ull get it.

Moose, That Is The Kit I used. I'm in a very similar situation as u. My block uses the front timing cover for oil dipstick and the pan does not have a provision for it. I left my front dipstick as is and since it's a fresh build I figured as long as oil looks clean and in the front sump, it should be ok. I do have to trim my original dipstick as it now bottoms out on the front sump. Just make sure u got 5 qts in that mojamma and call it good. If there is another way for us to get the rear sump dipstick, I'm all ears.

Order a pan for a '79 Mustang 5.0. That kit only has the dent in the side to kinda locate it, everything else is for the later block mounted setup.

When I was going to build a '78 302 for mine I ordered that kit and sent it back when I saw someone was too generous with what it would fit.

Updates

Got the oil pickup today, so i decided to drain the oil and get ready to swap the pans.

Ripped out the carped this past weekend, and discovered a bunch of rust. Just need to order a relocation kit and some gaskets, then should be ready to drop in.

Question about fueling

So I'm realizing that I will need to sort out my fuel lines and pump before I put the engine in. I guess I have three options:
1). Use mechanical- run new lines from tank
-Do I have to remove the fuel pump?

2). Use stock FI pump, get regulator
- Any good budget-friendly regulators? Would want a gauge (maybe remote, mount in dash) as well as a vacuum hookup (i would think)

3). Ditch both and put an inline
-On the face, seems like the easiest, but no idea what the tank is like, so could be pretty grimey and I might wreck a bunch of pumps.

I know this has been covered before- but I can't seem to find a good consensus of what to do... Leaning towards #1). because its basically no new parts.

Opinions?

if you have an 87 ranger then you have 2 fuel pumps , 1 on the frame rail close to the filter and engine and 1 in the tank , the 1 in the tank is about 6 pounds the 1 on the frame is the high out put pump , in between is a reservor that both feed and return are hooked to , 2 line from the tank and 2 line from the engine , delete the reservor and the pump on the frame if you are going carb. and plug all un used lines and it will work fine. if you are going efi then the high pump will work fine as is. daughter 87 has been running carb for 3 years as descibed. the tread http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134821

Moose, will a mechanical fuel pump fit? The way my engine sits, everything is super tight on the driver side by the steering box. Not sure a stock pump would work with a fi pump set up.
A good regulator and guage will cost ya about 60 bucks with some fittings to make option 2 work.
I know ur on a budget but u can do a new cell set up for cheaper than what I spent...just need to step down some parts. if u were interested I could help u pick that ish out.

Its an '86, I have found out, if that changes anything. Did not see the second pump, will look for it. I like the sounds of this simple solution- Thanks!

No clue if the mech will fit... Only one way to tell I guess, but it sounds like it wont. I will look for the second pump and see whats what under there. Pics will follow.

Pretty hard to get stuff done outside this time of year. Gets pitch black by 5:30pm practically.

What accessories are u using? If it's a serpentine style, it may raise the ps pump and give u some clearance.
I'm using the 69 mustang v belt set up and it sits low, close to the frame n steering box.

Also, I hear u on the daylight savings...really hits home on how much i need a garage.... might have been done already if so haha

Good luck n keep forging fwd.

I just built a 10x10 shed, 14' high. Not a garage, but better than having all my tools spread out in the snowbank! Driveway is also cluttered with this years ice-race car (2001 Subaru legacy GT)

I have the V-belt stuff, well, at least the alternator and crank pulley. My P/S pump needs a serp, but havent thought too much about that yet.

Can I just leave the P/S rack with no pump? maybe make a line to jump from pump in/out was what I was thinking.

fuel pump

Im guessing the silver cylindrical object is the FP.

Looks pretty scaly under there, eh?
