I tried to buy a Ranger today. And I failed.

I thought the same thing.... That much money for something with that many miles? PSHH eff that! Around here in central Ohio just about every truck over 10 years old has rust. Doesn't matter if you don't drive in the winter or not.... So rust is just another thing people around here deal with.... Like I said, I never said he should go buy it but theres options out there that aren't 10k.... 10k for any ranger just sounds wrong......

I could see a minty nice truck being worth it which is what this one looked like.

One of my former high school teachers finally traded in his '03 Level II a couple years ago. Twin stick, Alcoas, Sonic Blue, new 31" BFG's and like 80k miles. A beautiful truck I have drooled over since high school. No rust, dealer asked $14k for it and it wasn't on the lot for two weeks.

For lots of rust, I'd walk too. Those things eat themselves away quickly once they start to rust bad.

We had a clean 07 Sport 4x4 traded today. 87K miles, 4.0, 4x4, manual, super cab.

I saw a 05 locally, looked good on the outside except for the back bumper wasnt right, put my foot on it and pushed and it about fell off. Ive never seen one so “new” that looked that good on the body but the frame/undercarriage was rusted so badly.

I've seen a few where the body looked immaculate and the frame was garbage.


I'm working on an 04 Expedition right now that looks great from a distance, but if you knock on it it leaks rocker panel.

So. Here's the end result of the FX4:

Didn't get a shot of them, but front bed mounts are rotted out to the tune of the bed sitting 1/4" lower than it should be.


I didn't buy it. Dealer would only come down to 8700 out the door. As I was leaving, they asked me to make an offer. Told them I'd sleep on it. I can't imagine what I'd offer on something that's not much better than my 88.


Rear axle is definitely boned as well. Something bad happened to it at some point - axle tubes have been replaced, and no tags on the diff with orange gasket maker all over it.










Oh, and the awkward part:

Took it for a test drive. Ran it HARD to see if there was anything obvious wrong with it.

I know I'll get flak for saying this, but my 2.9 would eat this thing alive.

So, either I'm doing better than I thought with the 2.9, or there's something seriously amiss with the engine.
