I ran the vin number it has the 4.0 motor that has the SOHC, did ford fix that problem with the cam chains for that year ranger?

It *should* be. The worst years were 01-03, they supposedly fixed it for 04 but there are some of the later ones out there that still had the rattle. My in laws old explorer was an 09 with about 185k when they traded it in and it had a slight rattle on a cold start IIRC

If you PM me the vin, I can look in Oasis and see if the recalls have been done or not.

If everything works and it has no rust or damage, then that's a fair price in today's market.

@rubydist

I didn't know you were in the ford game. I was a parts manager at a ford dealer for years, and still do it part time.

I do fleet and broker sales for our Ford, Mazda and Hyundai stores.

ford claims they fixed the tensioners in 2002

Which ford motor is better the 4.0 with SOHC or the OHV?

That's a matter of opinion. The OHV is easily capable of going 400,000+ miles with good maintenance and they are easy to work on. The SOHC makes a fair bit more power and they are also capable of running for a LONG time - I have seen several with well over 300k - not easy to work on though, they are physically larger and way more complex.

If you go look at this one make sure the engine is dead cold when you start it and listen for any engine rattles that go away. That is a bad sign on these. Otherwise if you change the timing chain tensioners every 50k or so, and do your other routine maintenance, you should be fine. Looks like a nice truck.

Is that offer open to anyone? 😁

What years of rangers are the ones to look for that have the 4.0 OHV motors?

2000 was the last year of ohv 4.0 in the Ranger.

^This.
That's a big jump in age. If I wanted a reliable older Ranger as a daily I'd be considering newer. Not to mention the grill/hood changes the last few years are better looking IMO.
