Hurst shifter success stories only

Took delivery on a new Hurst shifter from Amazon. I received it Christmas Eve and just finished putting it on. I understand that some shifters came w/ a cork spacer, mine came with a standard paper type. I however, did use some black gasket adhesive on it, though it did not call for any. I did not require the spacer that was included. I did use that spacer and an x-acto knife for cutting the hole in the rubber gasket. That turned out perfect and fit snugly around the Hurst's body. I did away w/ the cup holder as I like the simpler look of the boot and trim ring. I also took the opportunity to change out the old ATF. I used Valvoline MAX LIFE, high mileage, DEX-MERC. I was attracted to the shifter for it's visual quality but, I was surprised by my ability to make quicker shifts. The neutral side to side motion is greatly lessened as well as the throws being shorten dramatically. There is no loss in reach for me over the stock shifter. I took two test drives. The first to check for any leaks or problems shifting. The second test drive I finished up by installing the two boots. Ironically I never heard any rattling without the boots installed. It was after they were installed that I heard the rattle. I must say that it is only slightly noticeable. I would not even notice it. I was just looking for that problem others had. I'll get back to everyone after I have driven the truck more. Kowboy

I estimate I've been running my Hurst for 80k miles. Started blowing tranny fluid out the tail shaft and through the shifter ~50k ago when I drained and filled the tranny. Kept adding fluid when this started then finally gave up. Funny thing, my tranny fluid finally got low enough that it stopped blowing fluid out... However, there's still ample fluid to lubricate. No excess gear noise, etc. 50k miles with 'low' fluid and still going strong.

Hey Bubba Bob; Did you have the correct ATF or were you experimenting w/ something other than what was recommended. Just trying to keep things in perspective. I've seen post where others have used all kinds of fluids. Not judging, just trying to get a hold on this thing. I'll recheck my oil level as, since I filled it through the shifter hole, I may have a touch too much in there. It may only be a little, but as you have stated, it is level sensitive. Appreciate your reply my friend. Kowboy

It's been a while, but I'm almost positive I put Mobil 1 full synthetic ATF in there.

Just thought I should give an update on this Hurst shifter thread. It's been almost 5 months now since installation and I can only say good things about the shifter. The only advice I have is to be extremely careful w/ the thin rubber gasket seal. It can easily get caught up in the bolt threads and get wound up while tightening the bolts. Better, smoother, faster shifts are the norm. I find it easier to keep up w/ traffic when pulling away at stop lights. I drive like an old man anyway. Oh, I am an old man. I'd definitely recommend the shifter.
