Horn Relay

Okay, I cooked my horn relay some how (or maybe it just died) on my 1997 Supercab 2wd 2.3L when I installed a FIAMM (spelling?) "OEM Replacement" horn from Advanced Auto Parts. The stock (I think it's stock) horn was also a FIAMM horn...for all intents and purposes they are exactly the same except for the tone they produce.

Anyway...I think it was just time for the relay to die because after the 3rd or 4th toot the horn sounded like it was dying and then it didn't work at all. I can't hear the relay click anymore now as well.

What I need to know is how hard is it to replace and what is the amperage for it? Also, what else is on the circuit for the horn? Just the horn or is there something else accompanying it? I'm thinking about getting an 'automotive' relay from RadiosHack that's 40A and 12v...would that be enough for a horn or do I need a higher rated relay?

Thanks,
Red

Here is the Horn Relay Circuit for my 95 Ranger, yours should be the same. I am not sure of the Amps/Voltage of the Relay but this will tell you what else is on the circuit. Hope this helps

The horn relay lives in the engine compartment power distribution box, locate on the firewall beside the master cylinder, the rectangular black box.Looking at it from the top it is the second one down on the right. It is also the PCM memory and it is a 20amp,to my knowledge there is no instrument panel fuse. That's the way it is on my 96 Ranger

There is no fuse on the interior, but as shown above the Fuse box in the Eng Compartment has a 30A fuse in conjunction with the PCM Memory

Well...I fiddled around with it and I guess it was just a bad ground because after I routed the ground wire to the mounting bolt it seems to work fine. Still isn't as loud as I wanted it to be...
