Hello so my 03 ranger has what it apears to be 4 cats on it and it’s the 3.0l two are upward on the y pipe and to are inline on the easy down, my only problem is that one of the inline cats has a hole in it and is kinda a big exhaust leak.

So I was thinking what if instead of replacing the two inline cats with 1 high flow cat would be a good idea or not thoughts ?

Should be fine
Yeah because I’m taking away 2 oem cats but replacing with a high flow so I will still have like 3 cats and I just passed inspection with the hole in the cat which I thought was funny hahah

Yeah, actually dad’s Ranger recently had a hole rot in the cats, I didn’t have time to deal with it so it went to a local exhaust shop. They cut the stock two off and welded in an aftermarket high-flow single. I didn’t question it beyond wanting the old cats to scrap, lol.

My only thpught is that I would do them all at once instead of having 2 old OEM cats for one side and a new, clean high flow cat on the other. That's just my OCD kicking in. It would bug me to know I have or might have different flows/pressures from one side to the other.

Another point may be, if the two sides look noticeably different, it may cause someone to flag an issue during your next inspection.

If both sides look the same, less likely to draw attention.

On my mustang I replaced the four factory cats with two aftermarket ones and there was never an issue. Some cats are more efficient then others, I think that's why you see four of them on some of these ford factory exhaust. My dodge with a V10 only had one cat, it was downstream of the Y in the exhaust and had a line form the air pump running to it. Weird setup.
