I just finished a full rebuild of my 1996 Ford Ranger 3.0. It has 1.8:1 roller rockers, 60MM upper intake off of an Explorer, 19lbs injectors, headers, and custom exhaust with cat removed. It starts fine, idles great, runs and drives great, except if you mash the throttle, it cuts out. The cutting out is more profound in neutral and mashing the throttle. It throws the cam positioning sensor code. Is my cam synchronizer off 1 tooth? If it is, do I clock it clockwise or counter clockwise?

Have you checked the cam synchro for excessive play?

I had a problem like that with my 5.0 swap, it would do fine until you mashed the throttle and then it would cut out and I heard a faint bbuuzzzzzzz. Scratched my head on it awhile and finally pulled the synchro to find that it had too much slop. I put a new synchro and sensor on. The new assembly I got from Autozone came with the synchro, sensor and an alignment tool. Put the motor at #1 cylinder TDC and plug it in.
