I'm installing a new engine in my 4.0L SOHC. Got the engine in and all ready to go, filled up with oil. Was working to get my transmission in when I noticed a oil leak from the oil filter adaptor :bawling:, where it mates with the engine block. I installed a new o-ring, cleaned the surfaces with acetone before putting it together. I included a photo of the part in question below:

Any suggestions as to what I should do now?? I'm thinking that it's going to be easier to pull off now and fix as opposed to when I have my tranny in. Should I put RTV in there in addition to the o-ring????

Thanks for any suggestions. I am trying to get this thing together today so I can start it up for the first time tomorrow....

Now would be the time to take it apart.

Check for a cut or otherwise damaged o-ring. It shouldn't require anything extra to seal.

I was thinking of putting a thin coat of RTV on the machined mating surfaces. Any thoughts?? I doubt the o-ring is kniked at all, it seemed to small when I put it in... but that was the o-ring that came with the kit and was very similar to the old one (I could not tell how the old one used to seat, as it was all worn down).

If the o-ring is doing its job no rtv should be required.

If the o-ring was too small or tight and snuck out of its groove it would cause a leak.

Yeah, I guess I just don't know where to get one that will seal it properly. RTV will be hard to use considering how little surface area there is between the oring and the edge.

Drag that part into a parts store and they should be able to size one.

It was probably right but it shifted on you and got cut when you tighted it. You have to be really careful with that type of o-ring seal.

I already did that when I had the engine all apart. They gave me the o-ring that is in there now. I guess that I'll drain the oil and take the darn thing off and see what I can do, hopefully your right and the darn thing got twisted or cut when I put it together...

BTW: I forgot to specify: I have not yet started the engine, just noticed that the area around the adaptor was wet with oil, which it obviously should not be unless I spilled some oil, which I am certain I did not. So I wiped it away and it did not immediately come back, i'll go out and check it shortly to see if it is continuing to leak.

Update: I just checked the adaptor and there is no oil on it :D Not sure where the other stuff came from, but I think I'll hook up the trans and start the motor to see if it leaks from there when its under pressure. Its easy enough to get at, just have to remove the passenger side wheel well cover and exhaust manifold.

Shouldn't the proper seal for it be the same as the one on the oil filter?
