Can anyone identify this axle? Guy says it’s from an explorer, just never seen one that wasn’t 3.73 or 4.10

What did it come in? Guy says it’s an explorer 8.8 but has drum brakes

Explorers had rear drums through 1994 (at least). Discs may have come in '95.

Would it likely be the same width (59-5/8”). How hard to convert to discs off later model explorer rear? 31 spline?

if you've got more pics, you should be able to tell if its 28 or 31 spline based on the axle tubes

Tell me the difference please in the axle tubes
the 28 spline axles neck down quite a bit at the end where the bearings are. the 31 splines also have a little bit of a neck in the same location but much less. i think there's comparison pics in the tech library

The first gen explorers did occasionally come with 3.27's, not too common, the majority were 3.73 with some 3.55's in there sometimes and very rarely 4.10's in first gen's...

Swapping to discs is pretty simple, just a matter of getting the backing plates, rotors and all hardware and the brake lines... If swapping and having to do it from junkyard stuff grab two passenger side soft lines and the center hard line. Get a tubing flare kit and cut up one of the stock Ranger hard lines or get some of the nuts and cut the Explorer hard line around where the Ranger center drop soft line goes and put the two nuts on that hard line there and you can use the stock Ranger hose. That's what I did on my '90 since I started with drums and converted...

So, is the only difference the drum brakes? Does 91-94 explorer still have 31 spline axles and 59-5/8” width?

Pretty much, the disc brake axles have shafts about 1/64" wider I read at one point but it's a non issue (like I said, I bolted disc brake parts to my drum brake axle, there was some minor scraping on corners between the rotor and the backing plate for a bit), they're all 31 spline and everything is interchangeable. The disc brake axles have a little tab on the back of the stock spring perch to bolt the end of the brake line to but that's minor...

As far as I know, all Explorers have 31 spline axles. Ranger 8.8's are 28 spline.
