i got a 94 ranger 2.3 5 speed and before i fixed my motor mounts, x member , transmission mount, put new plugs and wires, air filter as well on it i would drive it every 20 miles a gallon of gas. (fuel gauge dont work)
the motor sat so far up that the compressor was literially hitting the upper radiator hose and the rubber in the mounts were literially gone. and my x member was bent pushing the engine forward and transmission mount was gone as well. dont know how it drove to this day.... ( can take pictures for funny if anyones interested)

yes you all can say poor neglected ranger but after fixing the motor mounts brand new transmission mount and x member as well as new plugs wires air filter and a mobil oil change it seems to have given me some oddly increase in gas mileage which im believing might be close to 30mpg.

i filled my truck up literially to the fuel neck and have been driving it for the past week or so and have aquired almost 400 miles on the tank so far and when i prime the fuel line when turning the key i cant hear the fuel pump whisteling low fuel yet.

how many miles to a full tank does 2.3 rangers with almost 200k miles on it usually get you think?? im thinking i might get 500 miles outta this beast before i run out.
im also carrying a 1 gallon cell in the back when i do so i am not stranded haha.
also this is a stock ranger with no aftermarket parts, no k&n filters nada!!

It varies depending on driving habits and mods, but I've seen a few people claiming to get high 20s...don't think I've ever seen consistant 30s per gallon though...best thing to do is record the mileage when you fill up...drive it till it's low...fill up and record the miles again (in case you're not familiar with this method)...subtract the miles and divide by the gallons used to fill up...

FIY, my 96 Mazda B2300 gets between 21-23mpg with 176,000 miles on it and no major work or mods done to it. I get a little over 400 miles to the tank full.

I'd like to see a pic of your motor mounts just to compare with mine. I've never seen this type of round mount before, and don't really know what a bad one would look like. I suspect mine may be about due for a change. I'm used to seeing mounts that resemble the tranny mount.

im at 400 miles today and the fuel pump is starting to whine as if it was sucking low.
once it completely dies ill get the accurate reading but as of right now im at 400 with about 20 more miles to go id say

mine was no rubber barely and the engine sat forward

im getting anywhere from 19-23 mpg depending on season, driving habits, 4x4, & etc.. i have 160k on the 2.3L which has a few mild hop-ups: k&n filter, platinum spark plugs. and flowmaster exhaust, but they only really gained me 1-2 mpg

forgot to mention my motor mounts...i replaced mine around 110k and i think they already need replaced again. i also have the crappy round ones with rubber inside. i thought someone on here once mentioned retro-fitting older mounts to the 93-97 rangers, but i forget all the details. the jist of it was that it would eliminate the crappy rubber mount idea, and goto some kind of solid mount like my '85 b2 had.

I was just out on the Autozone site and see they have 2 different motor mounts listed. One says "solid" the other says "hydraulic". I imagine the first one is composed of solid rubber inside, but what the heck do they mean by "hydraulic"? Which one would be better to use?

My 2.5L with an M5OD and 3.73s had no trouble getting 28-29 MPG on long trips averaging 70 MPH. It would get 21-23 MPG around town.

I'm lucky to see 20mpg with my 2wd 2.3l 5spd.
I have a 3" K&N Cone, Platinum plugs, but I also have bigger tires with the stock gear. I have posi and 4.10 on the way though, so I believe I'll have a lot better fuel economy, If I can keep my foot out of it.

Even in my 2.3L Calli truck, I see 26 on my daily drive, and easily 30 on long desert stretches. The cruise gets set at 65, and I'm just along for the ride.

I get an easy 26 mpg on the hwy with my 88 2.3 w/5speed. I recently bought a 87 regular cab, short bed ranger without an engine (but the guy threw in the two complete 2.3's that were in the bed of it) that along with the weight of the 2 wheel tow dolly, and having to climb some really steep hills I still managed to get all most 23 mpg on I-10 in the Texas hill country.

back when I was 2 wheel drive with tiny tires and 3.08 gears I got up to 29mpg, now that I'm 4 wheel drive with 31" tires and 4.10 gears I get 19mpg

when I was getting 29mpg, that was over 420 miles on the tank (I have the smaller of the plastic tanks, the 17 gallon one), now I get right around 300 miles... but a lot of times I have to give it all she's got to keep up with traffic without cruising at 4000+rpm, I'll be adding the turbo motor in about a month, so that will change :)
