Off Topic. The best thing about being TOTM is how easy it is to get to my thread lol
 
People will buy them. But they usually want to put them back into the trucks they belong in. They aren't a very popular engine for a swap. The last 2 I sold I got 200 each for them.

I can get the 351M/4spd/205 all for $200. So I better just buy it anyways. If I can get $150 for the 351, I will be happy. I assume the only people that will want it are the guys that are doing a direct replacement.

FYI that NP205 is very strong. I've never been able to break one and I've broken just about anything else on a vehicle. But they are very heavy. They require mount off the drop side because they tend to break the tailhousing because of the weight. They also only have a 1.96 low range.

Yep. The good and the bad of the 205 lol. No chain/all gear and 'high' low range :sad:. Strong usually goes with heavy unfortunately.

With 5.13's and the 4 speed you want to put in, the 205's low range is not going to be an issue. I have 4.10's in mine and I'm pretty happy with my crawl speed, and I can still drive it on the highway at reasonable speeds.

The ONLY thing I don't like about my 205 is that it gets stuck in low range occasionally. I've had a couple other trucks with 205's that have the same issue. Might just be worn out.

Exaclty. The granny gear + np205 + 5.13s will put me around ~65:1. My curret setup is 47:1. That would be perfect.

The main reason I took my truck off the road is because my 2.9 couldnt hold 50mph with the 36s. A 4.0 or v8 would fix that problem. I miss driving that on the road. ESPECIALLY when I see shiny lifted Jeeps :yahoo:

Yup.. 4.0 seems to have enough torque plus the doubler i think you would be golden. You get to keep your transmission its lighter then a v8. And a 4.0 makes near (close enough) the same power as a 302

Only thing that sucks is no front digs.
 
I have a unique experience here because my tire size, gear ratio, etc all stayed the same before and after my engine swap:

Before - 2.9, FM145, 1350. 160HP. Rated at 170ft/lbs torque
After - 150HP Crown Vic 5.0, NP435, 205. Rated at 270 ft/lbs torque

(just for comparison, a 1994 4.0 V6 is rated at 160HP and 220 ft/lbs torque.)

So even though I supposedly lost 10HP, the torque increase was amazing. I couldn't hold 55 on the highway with the V6 at all. The 5.0 woke the truck up a LOT and it is literally the bottom of the barrel fuel injected V8.

My opinion is that if you are starting all over with a different drivetrain, just go with a V8. Skip the 4.0 altogether. The numbers tell you what you need to know, and the wiring, even on a fuel injected 302 swap, is NOT hard.
 
This is really a hard decision haha.

This truck is all about cheap and simplicity. I dont have a lot of money in it and can hang with $20k Jeeps. I already told the guy I will take it. I am not going to back out on him since he is a friend. I will probably try and sell the 351M and find a cheap 302/351W. If I dont find one, I will sell the 4spd and NP205. I would hunt down a complete 4.0L drivetrain at that point and build a doubler.

A 4.0L would be nice. Its basically drop in. I would ditch my FM146 though if I went that route. With a doubler, that will be my weak link for sure. I have friends with 4.0s and 35s that cruise the highways. Seems like they do fine. So I know it would be sufficient. My axles will also like the 4.0L more haha. The extra weight of the 4.0 would help my front tuck more.

A V8 is more work but would be cool to say haha. Mpgs do not matter to me. It would be heavier though. I am sure you guys know how light the FM146s are. Those are like 40-50 lbs haha. The torque of a V8 would be nice. The 2.9 cannot pull and hold my current tires on the road. Even with 5.13s. Being able to cruise the highways with ease would be awesome!
 
Is a new oil pan necessary on a V8 swap? I read something about having to change that.

Danger ranger (bryan) dropped a 302 in his and i dont recall him doing anything special to the pan/crossmember
 
Read up on the 302 oil pan options. Dual sump pans work best. A front sump pan will be very hard to make work.

I'd find a small block if I were you. The trans and t-case you are getting will work fine with that and if you sell the 351M, you could break even or be money ahead on them.
 
If you get a 302/351 from any 80+ truck or a 79+ mustang it should have the dual/rear sump type pan. The front pan sump was only in 79 older 2wd trucks and older cars.
 
Ahh, some came stock with the dual sump pans. That explains why some people need to change the pans and some dont.
