Full Width SAS on '90 Danger the 4th

4.0 OHV with an adapter plate to mate it to a NP435 would be the perfect setup in an RBV IMO.

Bullet proof with low end power and parts are still easy to come by for the 4.0 and you can run off the shelf harnesses and electronics.

This would be ideal! :icon_thumby: And I could keep my 1/2 tons

So much for my dually 4x4 project. That is being pushed way back now. However, 2wd isnt so bad.

I don't know if RuleBreaker is around anymore...if he is shoot him a PM. He used to sell the clutch disc and adapter needed to do it....

I have a 2.9/4.0 removable bell housing with external slave we may be able to rig up on a np435.

Im just worried the trans may be too heavy for it.. Its just lightweight aluminum

You must have scored that from one of the real early TK 4/5 speed Ranger transmissions, right?

I think it'd be possible to build an adapter plate. The bellhousing would probably hold up, the V8 bellhousings I referred to earlier are aluminum as well.

The problem you run into is finding a flywheel, a 10 spline clutch disk AND pressure plate that fit said flywheel, and the proper release bearing - the clutch disk being the hard part - those Ranger clutch disks were 8-7/8 diameter and to my knowledge, the smallest 10 spline V8 disk that would work with the NP435 is a 10".

It's more of a matter of it being (a lot) easier to use a V8 bellhousing and clutch like Rulebreaker did.

FWIW, here's the front of an NP435.

Slo vo has an adapter for a 4.0/np435 he was gonna put in the ex but last i saw hes thinking v8 on propane now

78-79 fords came with both a NP435 and a T18. A 435 has an aluminum top that the shifter pushs in and 1/4 turn. The T18 has a cast iron top and the shifter has a big steel nut that threads down to hold it on. You can use any Ford V8 or diesel with either trans you just have to swap the bellhousing to the correct one. 300, 289, 302, 351W, 351C uses a small block bellhousing. 352, 360, 390, 427, 428 use a FE bellhousing. 351M, 400, 429, 460 use the big block bellhousing. You can find a hydro version of the small block and big block bellhousing in 82-87 Ford trucks. The hydro bell with be aluminum though.

I did a bit of research last night. I think I may pass on this. I cant figure out if the 351M is bigger than the 351W or not. From what I read, it is heavier. I assume is the same physical size but I know they are completly different engines. There is also no aftermarket to help get the 351M in a Ranger. Motor mounts are easy. I dont mind massaging the firewall or cutting my hood. I just see issues with the exhaust. I dont think its worth to try this swap in my old beat up truck with my busy schedule. If it was a more popular engine, I would be all over it. But I am still on the fence haha.
Up to now, I have always told myself if I ever did want more power, I would just swap in a 4.0L.

But you guys are saying I can find a hydro bell housing from an 80s truck and use it on this 435/T18 that I would have? If I used the 351M, I know it would have to be a big block one. I can find 80s small block fords all day out here. Big block ones will be more challenging.

As i understand it a 351m is an underbored 400 which is a big block. Id think a 302/351 would be best or a 4.0/np435 combo
.

the 351m is a lot bigger than the 351w as far as physical size, plus the big block bolt pattern will be a tight fit for the bell housing in a ranger...

If you do a 4.0 why not use the 2.9 transmission (i think you can anyways) and do the doubler seeing as you already own it

The 351M is about the same size as a 460 engine but makes less power. They don't rev up very well either. A stock 302/351W will easily turn 1000rpm more than a 351M/400. If you are still considering a swap. I know of a 351W 4spd/208 combo in a 85 Bronco I can get for you cheap It you would want to make the drive down.

Good to know!

I might be. It all depends if I can get my 2.9 to start this weekend. Its been through wosre situations. So hopefully she is ok.

How hard is it to sell the combo I have? Mostly the engine. I havnt noticed anyone wanting a 351M yet haha

People will buy them. But they usually want to put them back into the trucks they belong in. They aren't a very popular engine for a swap. The last 2 I sold I got 200 each for them.

FYI that NP205 is very strong. I've never been able to break one and I've broken just about anything else on a vehicle. But they are very heavy. They require mount off the drop side because they tend to break the tailhousing because of the weight. They also only have a 1.96 low range.
