Good Evening:

I need a fuel sending unit for my '83 Ranger, 2.8 V6, 17 gallon tank. I've searched LMC, RockAuto, Amazon, eBay, various other sites and cannot find anything OEM.

Does anyone know where I can order one? And if not OEM, what can take its place?

Thanks in advance!

Chris

Pre-'89 Fords used 73-10 Ohms senders and guages

73 ohms when Empty
10 ohms when Full

'89 and up use 16-158 Ohms
16 ohms empty
158 ohms full

Google: 73-10 ohm fuel sending unit replacement

Yes, it will probably be hard to find a stock replacement.
If you look at the "fordification" link you may be able to repair yours.
Or the "tanksinc" units can be added to any fuel tank.

Have you tested to see if the issue is the gauge or sending unit by disconnecting and then grounding the sender wire, gauge should go all the way up and all the way down with that test.

Removing the bed is the best way to access fuel tank, 8 bolts, filler tubes and unhook tail light wires

I used one from a Bronco II which you can find easily. Albeit, the reading is a little off, but the important thing is I know where empty is. I had to bend the tube (by hand) a little bit, but other that that, that was it.

Been in for over a year and not issues other than the ones mentioned.

I had the same issue about 10 years ago. I ended up pulling a used sending unit out of a 1980's Ford F-150. Wired the electronic part onto my mine and it solved the problem.

thanks (and name change)

Thanks for the prompt replies and apologies for my late response back...had userid issues and can't for the life of me remember my password for bootleg; email on that account has been bad for a while, so now i'm drsvox.

anyway, I ended up sending the fuel sender to a place in Seneca Falls, NY for refurbishing. They sandblasted the unit (cleaned it up real nice), installed a new calibrated rheostat, float, and screen.

All in all it looks great!! Haven't had the chance to install on the new tank and test...that's a long way off anyway: block and headers are in the machine shop for a couple weeks.

Thanks again!

Modified Sending Unit

We were able to overcome this problem by purchasing a Spectra Premium FG72A (for a 1983 E-150) and extending it with a piece of tubing and a compression fitting. The gauge is a little bit off, but it seems to work ok.

wow! very cool.

I have since installed my $163 (yep, that's right) refurbished sender into a new tank; all strapped in, hooked up, and so far seems to be doing nicely, though I haven't put a full tank of gas in yet (still in the rebuild/restoration stage).

thanks for the feedback and input! much appreciated.
